Does anybody have any recipes for chemically treating brass to take on a bronze appearance?

I do! I recommend the shortcut, but here's what I did:

I filed the snub hub to a point, and then soaked it in saltwater and vinegar for many, many weeks. It was faster to add a bit of hydrochloric acid.

Bumping this thread because i recently experimented with White Vinegar and Peroxide.
It actually does work but the smell can be unpleasant.
Mixing a small amount of 50/50 percent into a small glass jar with top and throw the parts in the mixture re seal it shake it from time to time and it works in a few days in the jar.
Or outside the jar, brush the brass with the mixture and letting it fully dry between coats sometimes it takes several coats.

nice to know, both of those are easily available and in small quantities. I only had the hydrochloric because of some brick work at the time, but easier and cheaper to by vinegar and peroxide!

Been researching this a bit further and it seems for getting a weathered "bronze" your way is better Rokket.

The vinegar and peroxide method appears to be best for etching the brass in preparation soldering or gluing.
