Hi guys,

This thread is for discussion on the real Type VIID U-boats. If anyone has any information on the real boats please share it here. All aspects of the six VIIDs can be discussed (the patrol history, commanders, operational effectiveness, technical features, colour schemes and insignia of each individual boat, modifications made to each boat etc.).

We can start with U 213. Does anyone have info on this boat?

I saw a great book on the Kriegsmarine (I can not remember the title), it had a whole chapter on U-218, with many fantastic pictures of the boat, which were from the photographs album above.

By the way, a fantastic set of photographs of U-218

I have a partially original Type VIID plan, it show the mine tubes and the Control Room, I can post it.

Hi guys,

Good photos Nicolas, hadn't seen them before.

Simon, the second photo you posted (showing crewman saluting on aft deck) - I'm pretty sure this is U 47 in the autumn of 1940 in Lorient. The reason it may have been mislabelled as U 213 is Amelung von Varendorff. He became commander of U 213 but earlier he was a watch officer on U 47 from, if memory serves me correctly, the start of Scapa mission (patrol 2) until the end of patrol 9. He is very likely to be one of the officers in the photo in the U 47 photo.

It was Von Varendorff's association with U 47 which lead to him choosing the snorting bull as the personal insigia of U 213.

Correct or incorrect labelling for photo # 2, one thing that strikes me is how crowded the deck of the boat is with the whole crew mustered aft like that.

Considering that the photo shows almost half the length of the boat, and keeping mind that the habitable portion of the pressure hull does NOT extend all the way to the bow or the stern, and also thinking about how much room equipment, controls, bulkheads, periscopes, engines, motors and spare torpedoes take up on the inside, it really gives you an idea of how crowded these 'sewer pipes' really were.

I hadn't appreciated it before until put into perspective with that photo.

Hi Simon,

Excellent! I've been looking for late war shots of VIIDs as I've wondered what they did about the lower platform. Looks like they added the lower platform on top of some of the mineshafts.

With that camo U 218 would make some model.

I believe U-218 was the only VIIF to do a lower platform and camo. My initial drawing was of U-218 so I did a bit of research on U-218.

Bracco - I used CMK and Revell - the Rrevell are rubbery: the detail is good, but it's had to clean and paint them, or change poses (bizarre material doesn't glue well).

I just wanted to say thinks for this thread. I am in the middle of building a V11D from the revel kit plus many aftermarket items and was planning to build it with the larger wintergarden after reading something about this many years ago. Was never able to find any references, let alone a picture of this until today.

Does anyone know how many mine tubes were covered by this extension - The article I read said 1, but it looks to be possibly more from the photo?

I also, maybe mistakenly, understood that the wintergarden was modified to have 2 AA guns, I am assuming side by side as in the Turm 4 towers. Can anyone confirm this - or have a photo of this configuration?

Hello Richard,

Welcome to the forum. NZSnowman posted some good shots on page 1 of this thread. These show a VIID with wintergarten.

The photo that is labelled "19 September 1943" - this looks like a VIID with what looks like a Turm II. On the upper platform there looks to be a single 37mm (at least I think it might be 37mm) with a shield. On the lower platform there looks to be a single 20mm.

The two photos above that show U 218 with camouflage and what looks like a Turm IV tower. Looks like a pair of twin 20mms on the upper platform and a single 37mm on the lower platform.

I presume the VIIDs followed the same pattern as the VIICs in that in 1943 they were first modified to Turm II, then a few months later were modified to Turm IV.

On the question of how many tubes were covered by the extension, have a look at the top image of U 218 in NZSnowman's post. I can only see two tubes remaining behind the Turm IV. There were originally 5 tubes so I am left thinking that the Turm IV covered 3 tubes, leaving 2 tubes exposed behind. Can anybody confirm or have any different info on this?

thankyou for the reply. I agree that the photos seem to indicate upto 3 tubes covered. I gather these covered ones would become unusable so in the later parts of the war was mine laying becoming less of a focus over AA protection?

I didn't notice the difference between the two photos. The additional platform on the "19 September 1943" photo seems to be covering less tubes and actually seems to refer back to what I read in the past on the addition of the AA gun. This article mentioned only 1 tube was lost - I wish I could relocate this.
