The next build has begun. This is Tamiya's excellent 1/48 Heinkel He 219A7. Currently the only aftermarket stuff I have for this kit is the Aires cockpit and Eduard masks. I may end up getting either Aires, or CMK's engine(s) set; depending on how much time I will put into this build. I am still researching an aircraft to base the build on, but I have started the cockpit which the following pictures depict. The Aires set is very well engineered and accurate. I have atached all the PE parts I can before painting, a few will have to be sprayed on the fret. Those parts are mostly those that will have gauges installed behind them.

I have finished the general and detail painting of the cockpit. I painted it RLM66 Schwarzgrau and picked out the detail with various colors. The parts have also been sprayed with two coats of Future to prep them for a wash. Next up will be dry brushing and weathering.

I have finished weathering the cockpit and it is ready to assemble. Following are a few pictures of the various parts. I am fairly pleased with how the weathering turned out, though there is always room for improvement.

Completed the display base for the model today. It represents a well used maintenance stand. I built it using evergreen plastic scribed, sanded and airbrushed to look like worn concrete. I used filters, washes and a little dry brushing to provide contrast and bring out details. I added a little grass to provide a bit of color.

A bit of progress to report. I decided to display an engine being serviced on the Uhu and brought a CMK resin kit of a DB603, firewalls, radiator, etc. I used pictures of the engine that is displayed at the NASM in Washington D.C. as a reference and got to work. The engine is built and both firewalls are in place. The first 3 pictures show the basic engine after construction. The next 3 photos show the engine after a little superdetailing using copper wire and scrap plastic. The final picture is the cowling. I had to bore out the center to get the engine to fit properly.

The engine is finished. I decided not to install the flame suppressor mounts or flame suppressors as I found during test fitting they covered up alot of the detail work I did. Because I chose not to install those things I needed to display exhaust pipes. Fortunately I kept the kit part that has the exhausts, but is not required when using the CMK aftermarket engine set. I cut the exhausts off, routed the ends out, cleaned the parts up and mounted them. They turned out pretty well. I painted the engine with various metallizer colors and weathered it with a black wash and pastel chalk. It should look pretty good when mounted.

Flame suppressors are important (and ugly) for night hunting but the He 219 "UHU" is a very elegant plane and it's a shame
to hide the exhaust pipes.

Your DB 603 looks great with the EP ! if i may suggest a keyword : oil. Oder kommt er gerade aus dem werk ?

Hi Pepper, thanks for the comments. I agree with you about the flame suppressors being necessary, the other engine will have them installed. I plan to show this engine being installed and worked on, hence it's relative cleaness. The "old" engine will be on the ground and I plan to make it dirtier. It was a neat little challenge to install the exhausts, and I think the rust adds a bit of contrast to the metal colors. I did a little weathering to this engine because I wanted to simulate a rebuilt engine being installed.

The engines on the links you gave me look fantastic. I saved the sites as a reference source. Thank you!

A bit of progress this weekend. I primed the plane on Saturday and amazingly there were no seams or puttying that needed improvement. This has only happened to me once before so I am counting my good fortune. Today, I painted the RLM 76 base coat. The pictures show the Uhu in factory fresh RLM 76 waiting to have its mottled RLM 75 camo sprayed. The bit and parts are about 95% finished and you can see most of them in picture 1.

I broke out the Iwata HP-C+ to spray the camo; that is about all I use that airbrush for. After some practice on scrap plastic to get me hand in I plan to spray the camo tomorrow or Tuesday.

Ernest, that bird is awesome! I wonder waht would be an A for you! Did you get "Battles with the Luftwaffe"? It's an awesome book with great photos and can be bought for very little money on amazon, I bought mine for just 0,01 Euro, amazing eh?

Thanks for the kind comments Bracco. Hmmm an "A" rating for a build. To be honest, I don't think I have ever given myself an "A" on any of my builds. Like alot of craftsmen I tend to see the mistakes, both big and small, in my work rather then all the good things. I think that chasing that elusive "A" is one of the things I model for; maybe someday I will reach it.

I do have the book you mentioned, and it does have some great photos. 0,01 Euro is ALOT cheaper then I paid for my copy! Good buy!

The plane is finished and mounted on the base. Now I need to figure out exactly how I want to make the diorama work. If I had thought it through better, I could have built an engine stand and shown the engine being worked on while hanging. That way both the engine and the firewall would be able to be seen. Alas, I didn't think to do that until I had already mounted the engine.

Should be interesting getting things arranged to tell a story using the space available. Pictures follow here and in the next couple of posts along with a capsule summary of Str

And a few more shots. The small antenna in the center of the nose in the last shot was scratchbuilt to represent a FuG 212, which was used until the Fall of 1944.
