Hi guys,

Thanks for your interest!

Submarine Vesikko has been my real love since I saw it in Suomenlinna Sea Fortress when I was seven.  ::)
So writing a book about the subject is a dream come true.

There are many hints to CV 707 / Vesikko in submarine books but no monographs except one booklet with only few images. So I wanted to make a book for both history and modeling enthusiastic.

History of Vesikko is much more than a story of one sub. CV 707 was a technical leap and true starting point of new German u-boat arm in 1930

The Vesikko book was released last Monday.

We had press conference and all went well:
Several TV channels, radio stations and newspapers made their story about Vesikko and the book.
I hope this will help to get more funds for the museum submarine.

We had some good time with the TV reporter (commercial MTV3) in Vesikko:

That funny sounding language is Finnish.  :D

I trust your press conference in Helsinki went well.

Congratulations on completing your book.

Hi Timo,

I received your book today. Wow, you have done well. The book exceeded my expectations, with no negative points at all. There are numerous period photos, all of which are printed in very high quality. There are also some really great shots of Type IIs, again in good quality.

Given that I cannot speak Finnish I cannot make comment on the main text. But the English captions are very helpful, especially to the modeller. The most helpful point for the modeller is that you have made comments on how the boat was changed and her colour schemes. The book is in chronological order, which helps to build the picture of the boat's various features and colour schemes. The colour side profiles also help enormously in this regard.

The 45 colour walk-around photos of the Vesikko are also essential. They provide a modeller with sufficient research material for a superdetail project.

Altogether it is a perfect research resource for a Vesikko build.

Well done!

Dougie

Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Timo.

I talked to local model seller and he (Kuivalainen) heard from MPM that the model should be released in the last quarter of 2010.

Well the good news is that they have not given up the Vesikko kit.
I was already a bit pessimistic.

If the kit comes out in one year I have enough time to complete my IIA.
I build rather slowly. Family man problem, you know.  :-\

You are right: the depth charge dropper was installed 1942-43 while Vesikko had black and white splinter camouflage. Dropper is not difficult for a modeler for some scratch experience.

Hi Timo.

I know the national archive/archive inc. has digitalized micro films with war diaries, plans and info about Finnish submarines (all of them) so i was wondering
have you seen them? I mean the camo painting etc...

http://kronos.narc.fi/aarre/aarre.php?t=aineistot&auktunnus=32817

And if this is familiar to you, is it hard to see this all or even get some copies?

Another possibility is the 1940 all black colour with big number 5 on both sides of the CT.

In 1941 Vesikko had four color diamond camouflage. I should be also very interesting. But I have to do some digging before I dare to guess how the colors were placed.  ::)

It has been quiet for modelling for me...  But Not so quiet to look what is going on and what is coming...
I e-mailed (again) to MPM and asked the releasing date of long waited CV-707 Vesikko.
Here is the answer...

Hello,

We had to postpone this kit due to other products to be released this year.

The plan is to release Vesikko in the spring 2011.

Some good news about Vesikko. The War museum is going to invest 350 000 to 450 000 euros to preserve the U-boat. Vesikko is to be raised about 40cm more to prevent seawater corrosion.
The outer hull parts (some of them) will be replaced. Also the interior will be painted. The work starts after summer season when she will be hoised up slowly. The hoisting should last 2 or 3 days.
The preservation should be finished in the spring of 2013 when is the Vesikkos 80th birthday fair.

I hope they also re-built the periscope and ct to the shape she looked at the 30

That is fantastic! I think The Vesikko is under appreciated as it's own history, and sub history. I hope they continue raising money.

The CT and scope, that is SOME project (at least it was for the Cobia crew!), but very much worth it.

Indeed it is...  The scope was made from some kind of air ventilation pipe just to look like one.. Really ugly IMO! I hope they put some effort to build a better one...

I visited 4 Gatos last year and it was a similar story. One was in the Atlantic, flaky rust, pretty much just a matter of time before she is gone. I think she rests on concrete pillars under the water, so she may not sink, but she might be unvisitable in a  few years. 2 were in great shape, but are in fresh water. 1 was in good shape, but is maintained by Navu help, and they have relaced the wood deck with steel tubing that is about the same size and looks roughly like wood.

I guess the best way is a museum building like U 505. But BIG money

Vesikkos preservation started few days ago. They shipped gravel by truck and ferry under the boat. The museum is open till the end of this month so the hoisting of the boat starts in 3 weeks.

At the moment there is really hard to get any information about the restoration but i think when it really starts there is going to be writings and clips in local newspapers and television. We

discoveries around the fortress. Wrecks and so on. Russian engineers plans how to make a super size dry dock between two of the largest
islands of Suomenlinna. Really interesting if i may say!  :) But when we stepped out there was already raining and we didn

We visited Vesikko again last weekend... Small progress is seen. A company named Ship Repair and Conversion  www.src.ee is working with a small crane making some lifting points for a bigger crane.
Here are few pics...

The fall here is almost over soon and we are waiting the weather getting colder soon... It should be snowing and the temperature getting below zero in two weeks or so.
Perhaps next saturday me and my son will take the last visit to Suomenlinna this year to see Vesikko and some tall ships in the Suomenlinna drydock built in 1700 century.
Enjoying the hot smoked salmon soup at the cafe balcony in the fortress! http://www.suomenlinna.fi/en/  :)

It has been a quite a lot of time since last update... At this moment Vesikkos keel is rebuilt and most of the rusted outer hull parts too. Mostly the plates with flooding holes. Looks like the work is to be done by the cheap way because all the rusted parts not to be visible (between pressurehull and surface plating) were not treated anyway with anti corrosion...  A really sad sight! Anyway the whole hull is water blasted to remove the old paint and the wooden deck is gone by now.  I don

Hi Anakin,

Thanks for updating us on the Vesikko. Since it will remain outside, exposed to the elements all year round, it is so important to have quality maintenance and restoration at regular intervals. It's a bit concerning to hear that not all parts were treated with anti-corrosion. Perhaps this is a cost issue. Either way it would be good to see the result once the restoration is complete.

Cheers,

Dougie

Finally i have heard some news and facts about Vesikko... Last time i saw her she was coated with yellow sheets and some black paint (anticorrosion). Now the war museum people are starting to preserve inner parts of the boat. The voice pipes should be operational next summer, beds and seats should be good as new too. Also the rudders agle position device/gauge will be working and in use for visitors... Sounds great to me.  :)  The best thing i

It is really nice to hear that your countrymen are working hard to preserve the Vesikko.  One of these days I would like to make a trip to Finland and visit her.  Once the restoration is complete I might just have to talk my wife into a short trip to the Helsinki area.   :P   I wonder how I could sell that idea to her?!  Thank you for taking the timw to visit the boat and keeping us all up to date on the restoration progress.
