U-2322 markings
« on: 06 May , 2009, 01:08 »
I have just found a picture of U-2322 on the net which made me think about the color of the stripe around her conning tower.

ICM's kit states that the stripe around the conning tower should be white (same color as the "bent I" symbol). Every model of U-2322 I have seen built has white stripe....

Here is the picture I have found which makes me think that the stripe might have actually been yellow.

If you take a look at the Photoshop blow-up of the two color side by side it clearly shows that they are two different shades.
Would it be possible that the stripe was actually yellow?

Another thing made me think along those lines as well: all types XXI sporting any stripes were either black, or yellow or combination of both.
I have never seen picture of type XXI actually carrying white stripe.

I would like to know what you guys think about this?

Conus00..I just looked at U-2322 and it was assigned to training flotillas from July '44 to Jan. '45. I'm sure your already aware of this though....But if my memory serves me right, weren't training boats identified with a "White" stripe..?  Cheers/Regards, Bill

According to "Vom original zom model" (as far as I can remember) on the XXI the trainingboats had a yellow stripe - guess the same would be true for the XXIII - i

Mr. Mox / Rabapla....I'm now a little smarter, thanks...I think I was confusing the white hull markings of the "monsun" boats...

Hi Conus,

Just to concur with the other guys, the training stripes were yellow. Type VIIs also had yellow stripes on the deck but I don't know if this occured on XXIIIs.

Cheers,

Dougie

Interesting. Thanks for your opinion, guys. U-2322 is my next project (after I finish my type XXI) and so far I am leaning towards yellow stripe.

I actually have both 1/144 XXIII kits: ICM's and Trumpeters'. I have originaly bought ICM before Trumpeter was out. I have read that Trumpeter's is much better quality (and offers the correct sail for U-2322) so I'm gonna build that one as full hulled U-2322 and ICM's as S-170 Hai waterline diorama. I also have one set of Griffon's PE set which will go on the U-2322.
It's gonna be nice double-build. :D

BTW Jan, check my posting on the ModelShipwrights I uploaded two pictures for you there in my XXI blog.

Yes, the trumpeter kit looks nice, and its smart to include more that one sail. I have the ICM somewhere - got it as a price at a competition - so I guess i

Yep. I agree. Both Revell's subs with interior have kind of "toyish" feel to it. Accuracy has probably gone to hell ;), but I do believe that with a lot of scratchbuilding they can be made into fairly accurate models. The unfortunate factor is the lack of interior pictures for XXI.
Good luck and definitely post some pictures of your build.

Yep, the U-2540 (Aka Wilhelm Bauer). The only question is: did they take the pictures before her conversion to W.B. or after?
If he is intending to build WWII type XXI I would be very careful about using W.B. interior shots as a reference because she was extensively modified inside out.
