Another Revell Type VII question
« on: 01 Sep , 2011, 08:10 »

I drilled out the two holes above where they are marked on the Revell model, and was test fitting one of the louvred PE pieces when it occured to me, only intakes would have louvred covers.

If these are discharges, the PE covers would be inappropriate.

Every diagram I can find of the Trim/Drain system on a type VII u-boat show seawater intakes/dicharges in the MBT/diving tanks, not directly through the hull.

I've check these diagrams. http://www.uboatarchive.net/U-570DesignBook.htm

Anyone have an idea what these could be? Placement puts them below deck level. One in the #3 diving tank, right below the drain pump, and the other at the forward end of the diesel engine room.

Hmmm, interesting question, no idea. I did like those thumbnails, and noticed "steam heating arrangement" - how interesting!

After much research and more than a little frustration, I have decided to fill these holes and eliminate them altogether.

These holes appear on U-995, very clearly, on the starboard side only. They do not exist on the port side.

I have had no luck finding a clear image of this area on a type VII. A few long distance shots of boats on their sides are too blurry to see clearly.

No schematics I have found show any intakes/discharges through the pressure hull to sea. They are always connected to one tank or another or go under the deck.

I feel I've been bitten by U-995 once again.  :(

Wise idea Osmium, i did the same research and came to the same conclusions you draw. Anyways the holes don't seem to appear on the sides of many colour profiles seen on various books nor on Andrea miniatures' 1/35 VIIC, but, of course this could mean nothing..
cheers!

It's on a VIIB at Germania Werft. ?Shadow ?hole/opening.. dunno, too far to say.
Maybe other fellows in the forum know what it is and can tell us

If you refer to the hole at the end of the saddle tank, I've seen 1 other picture with that feature, though it could certainly have been of the same boat.

I also recall seeing a VIIC/41 that had 3 limber holes on the bottom of the saddle tank in that postition as well as the 3 limber holes in the structure just above the end of the saddle tank.
