Typ XXI questions
« on: 11 Dec , 2008, 15:51 »
Hello guys,
I am in the process of building Revell's 1/144 Typ XXI uboat. I am trying to modify the kit as much as possible to make it look like WW2 Type XXI. So far I have been working on the conning tower and I have recently run into a dead end. I am trying to build U-2536. I have done my research and found only one picture od U-2536 and some pictures of type XXI in general. I also own some publications about XXI as well but still have some questions:
1) Here is the only picture of U-2536 I have found. There is an emblem right next to the white number 2536 but when I have tried to find the emblem which the uboat carried I couldn't find any information.

I have created a mockup of the U-2536 and figured out that it would look something like this:

Does it look correct?

2) I am confused about the position of the flagpole on the top of the conning tower. Here are all the pictures on the subject I have:

It seems to me that different boats had a different tower configurations. I know for fact that (for example) draining holes on the towers differentiated based on the shipyard the particular boat was built at.
So far I think that there are three different positions for the flagpole. I am inclined to put it in position A on this picture:

Can someone here shed some light on this issue for me? Or, even better, does anyone have a picture of the top of the conning tower of U-2536?
Thanks a lot!

Google earth. ;D

Id go with the position C. It just looks that way from the pictures you provided. Im not certain tho.
Good luck with the build. Are you thinking of some WIP posting here?

Hi Siara,
Yes, I will create WIP thread on this build.
When you said "Google Earth" I am assuming the you had the U-2540 (aka Wilhelm Bauer) in mind. I don't think I would like too use that particular submarine for a reference. The Germans made a multiple changes when they converted U-2540 to Wilhelm Bauer and Revell's kit is actually (and unfortunately) based on that sub. I have been spending some time to undo the mistakes Revell made in their kit.  :D
But it was a great idea.

As far as positioning of the flagpole goes, C was my second pick, but if you take a look at the 2nd picture in 2) the flagpole appears to be in front of the radar antenna rather then behind it so that would indicate position A. I will think about it and maybe try to find some more images.

I am no expert of type XXI, but have a look at what that modeler is building there. The text is not understandable for me, but the images speaks for themselves:

Maybe you can write him he might have quite good infos. ;)

The text is understandable to me, being Czech (my native language). :D :D :D
Good references, I have already saved a whole bunch of photos from his website. IMO he's great modeler and would love to have his scratchbuilding skills....
I will try to send him an email...
Thanks!
