I'm building it right now. Overall fit is quite nice, but the kit lacks some important details.

There are no flooding holes under the upper edge of the deck, torpedo tube doors are not present on the upper two tubes. While joining deck with the hull halves you need to use some filler and do some sanding.

To sum up, for a low price, you get a nice model and with some work it will be nice and correct. With even more work it will be great.

cheers!

P.S.
Almost forgot. There are no decals in the box which is the biggest flaw of the kit. There are also no cross to place it on the conning tower.

I take this type IIB as a training before type VIIC waiting in drydock number 2. In drydock number 3 waits type IXC in 1/350th scale - my 1/72nd U-995 came in second on a contest lately and this is a prize. So as you can see, my u-boat collection don't fit in one scale.

It's good to have many scales and spread it about! Thanks for the review on the kit.

I also start with this model, there is a lot of things to do if we want to get something similar to U IIB :). But this is part of our hobby. Pity that there is not decals with numbers and insignia.

My U11 or U9 I did not decide yet ;)

Hi Elpheli,

Nice start on your Type IIB model. We've just designed white pre-war numbers in 144th scale for this kit. Assuming we can get them printed at a reasonable price, then AMP will be releasing these decals for you. Oh, and the decal sheet would include Type II waterline draft markings in 144th scale as well.

Looking forward to your build.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi Epheli,

Once we get the decals printed I'll take photos and post a preview. It is still early at the moment as we've just finished the drawing.

Cheers,

Dougie

The pre war decals might be a good idea... I might possibly need at some time IIB or C insignias...  And something for the VIIB! In 1/72 scale...

Hi Anakin,

Is it 1/72nd decals for the pre-war numbers you are looking for? Or specific insignias? If you like you can send me a PM with details of which numbers / insignia you are looking for.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi, I just bought the ICM type IIB. You did a fantastic job on it! It inspired me to buy one. I am currently working on my Revell U-boat VIIC 1/144 scale with photo etched parts form Griffon. It's quite the project. I have been making videos on Youtube. If you want check it out. http://youtu.be/oyFEg9EtUyU
Anyway, my question is: Where did you get your decals for the IIB? Mine did not have any. It sucks. I don't know if they just stopped putting them in there or they goofed up at ICM. Thanks.

Thanks for good opinion :). The final gallery of my IIB is here http://models.rokket.biz/index.php?topic=846.0. What You see is not a decal, I printed cross and eagle on the normal paper in few dimensions and choose the proper one. This also give me the kind of 3D effect :).

Your video is awsome, I also have this u-boot with griffon so we can compare our job in the future :)
