Hi Guys,

I wast at U 505 yesterday. I took some shots of stuff we are interested in (hull stuff, etc., etc.) I will be arranging when I get back, and we are looking at different groups of pix we can offer modellers in some combo of "easy and cheap for modellers, some benefit for AMP". Anyway...

Some random thoughts...

U 505 is quite impressive. The display is excellent, but the boat itself, she's impressive, yet compared to the 4 USN Gatos I'm touring, "Victorian" - just something about the interior and all the wood and the little details. It was pretty thrillsome to be inside! Unfortunately no pix allowed inside. I did get some of the mockup displays around.

Something else...many of the details are so familiar from VIIC stuff, and it sure does seem that the KM had a new design for this model, the IXC, but kept doing things the way they always did - rigging, hatches, bits here and there. I only have loose observation and no scientific evidence, but I think it is very safe to look at IXCs for many VIIC details. as for U 505 herself, as always, the present display must be looked at carefully, being modified over 60 years, but i think she is probably less messed up than U 995.

Anyway, it was a great time and a great boat, and I think she can be useful to all KM uboat modellers.

I was just there last month doing some research on hull details etc. for my Type IX projects. I have since started a new 1/72 Type IX project of U-505 as well as my 1/72 U-805. By the way; my U-805 should be done by Feburary for a show here in Minnesota. Looking foward to seeing what you come up with. The Type IX definetly needs more press as far as detail and general all around info that would be helpful for modelers.

Hello Again!
My 1/72 U-505 is coming along. I am almost ready to start working on the pressure hull. This will be a major undertaking because there is no set of plans to work off and the hull is longer and wider than a Type VII.
As far as modifications on the actual U-505 here are my thoughts after careful study of pictures and actually seeing the U-boot several times:
The upper hull paint is a shade close to heilgrau. This is not correct for U-505 at the time of capture in 1944. A darker shade of blue-gray was used; possibly Blugrau 58? Doggie will have to weigh in on this matter. The lower hull color is close to the correct dark blue- gray. The starbord foward torpedo storage hatch was replaced due to the damage done by a depth charge at the time of capture. The deck needs a darker shade of preservative on the wood. At present it is too light. My father has commented that the deck on both U-Booten he was on had very dark, almost black decks. Of course the hull acess hatch openings inside the Boot have been inlarged to allow easy access for the tours on the Boot. Other smaller modifications have been done over the years, but in general the Boot is very close to original at the time of capture.

Hi Dan,

Nice to hear the Type IX is coming along nicely. The curator Keith Gill spent a considerable amount of time and effort into researching historical accuracy regarding the U 505's exterior and interior colours. Having said that, I agree with you that the current upper colour does look a bit light compared to U 505 during her capture. Somewhere around Blaugrau 58/1 or maybe a wee bit lighter for the upper colour for the capture?

I think the tower of U 505 was much darker than the upper hull, something like the very dark Blauschwarz 58/2?

Note that your dad's U 805 when it surrendered was in a very similar scheme (with the peeling / flaking paint on the tower much darker than the upper hull paint).

Hi Dougie!
How has my old Friend been? I agree with you on your comments. The colours on the decks of U-Booten have been a topic of issue for some time. Most U-boot vets will tell you the deck had a preservative not a paint on the decks. This wore in time and showed the wood underneath. The wood was a low grade wood used at the time and was not teak or a hard wood such as walnut.
Yes, the schemes of both U-booten ;U-805 and U-505, are very simular. Thank you for your expert comments Dougie!

Some sad news to report: My mother of 84 years passed away a week ago. She will be missed by both my father and I. She came from Germany with my father and my older brother; then only 16 months old back in 1949. During the war she helped carry ammo for the AA batteries around her town. She shook Hitler's hand once during a Rally in the late 30's.
Well, I am finished with the basic pressure hull for my 1/72 U-505. I am now ready to start to detail the top of the pressure hull. The Type IX.s configuration is different than a Type VII in this regard due to the location of the Engine room being closer to the control room. Does anyone have a symatic or drawing of this for a type IX?

Hello Dan, please accept my condolences. My grandfather passed away June 2009 two monthes shy of his 90th birthday. I still miss him alot. He has a crewman, radio operator, on German bombers during WWII. I got my interest in modelling WWII Luftwaffe aircraft from him.

My condolences regarding your mother Dan.

Similar to Ernest, my father died in 2008 just shy of his 90th. He was on the side, flying Lancasters and Halifaxes for the RAF, and was shot down and in Stalag Luft III during the Great Escape. He always tried to steer me towards aircraft models, and while I built a lot of those for him and learned the basics, I always kept returning to ship models instead. I guess my grandfathers both being sailors was in the blood.

I go tomorrow to learn the biopsy results to find out if I have the same that got Dad. Been kind of hard to concentrate on models lately.

Sorry to hear kind of bad news... A loss of loved one is always hard!

My dad passed away 13 years ago in the age of 50. Years has gone and it still hurts... But it also
brings back some great memories on my mind. I have his and my own army dog tags on my necklace!
So he is always near me and in my heart!

Hello All!
Thank you all for the prayers and thoughts. My Father is now 91. This has been hard for him. My parents were married in 1947 in Germany. My father returned from being a PW in the US in 1946. When he returned home there was no house. It had been destroyed during the war. He had not been back since 1942. He accepted a job as a tool designer for Caterpillar Inc and was tranfered to Peoria in 1949. He worked for them for 40 years. I retired from teaching last year. So at least I am set in my life. I have my models and my dog and my Father.
I am now setting the deck on my U-505 project.

Hi Dan,
I just returned from a trip to Chicago to visit the U-505, quite an experience! A beautiful boat. I can't help with any line drawings but I took lots of pictures of the inside and the outside of the boat during the guided tour.
I don't mean to hijack your thread, but one of the former US submariner volunteers asked me if I knew what the two appendages are on the lower bow of U-505, one on each side, anybody know?

Sorry for the long delay. I am now beginning work on a new U-505. This model is a 1/72 full hull model. I am looking for any detail photos and line drawing of a Type IXC U-Boot. All help would be great! This will be a combined effort with a friend in our model club to show U-505 as she was being set on a dry dock off the lake in Chicago in 1952.

My Dad (Capital "D"!) died 22.5 years ago, I was barely 25, now I'm close to 50. Though we had many differences, we were quite the buddies, and it was Twilight Zone to lose him. I've grown and lived almost as much time as I was alive when I was with him...I'm OK day-to-day, but it will always be a Big Thing. Time will heal, but always remember the good stuff. "history" is made from every day.

Thanks for the welcome. Dad had colon cancer two months ago and had that removed. He doing ok, he has his good and bad days. He has always been a survivor! I guess it goes back to his days on the Booten! He is 92 now!
I have the ruff work done on the pressure hull. I am now going to start on the plumbing on the top of the pressure hull. So I have temporally taped the photo etch deck on the hull and am tracing where the various hatches/ detail is. Trying to figure out an idea where all this needs to go! As I have yet to find any drawings of the workings of the Type IX. I am also usings line drawings for the Type VII as a rough idea even though there are some major differences where things go on the two Types. More to come....
By the way, thanks for sharing your photos of U-505 from your visit, they are a great help! I CAN'T REMEMBER EVERYTHING!!!

Thank you for the comments! I have been wanting to do a 1/72 U-505 for some time. Getting all the research together is key in a project like this. I live about 12 hours away from the U-505 itself. I went to see it in it's new home in 2010. It was a trip I would recommend to anyone. Note that the Boot has some accuracy issues, it is still awesome to see. The photos people have sent me including my great friend Dougie, and the photos and videos I have seen on the internet have been a great help. WWII veterans have also helped but memories fad after 60 plus years.
I am now working on deck details. Then on to the detail on the hull including Trop doors bow and stern. All the rivets, seams, and welds are a major undertaking all by themselves. So as you can see I have lots to do yet. Bored, I don't think so...

Hi Dan, the U-505 exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry is a real treat to see. I am from Crystal Lake, IL - though I live in Germany now - which is a little over an hour's drive from the museum, on a good traffic day. As a child and young man I went there several times and aleways spent most of the hours spent there looking at U-505. The museum has done an outstanding job with the display and it is gratifying the see the uboot out of the weather, which is very harsh in the winter. Though there are a few accuracy issues, I think the curator has done an excellent job with the display and the restoration of the uboot which was in fairly poor condition prior to it being moved indoors. I real treasure for us all.

I will continue to follow your outstanding build with interest. And I hope to pick up some good tips along the way.

The U-505 sat in the water in Bermuda for several years before being towed up to IL. And it was in bad shape even then. I live in Mountain Lake, Minn so I know ahout the weather issues. My father has not seen it since it was moved. I think he would be proud and amazed of all the fuss about a German U-Boat! I just wish they could have done the decks and paint scheme to be alittle more accurate!

Well, I put more detail on the deck and C Tower. Alot more to add. I've got two twin 2.0 cm to build and attach and the 3.7 cm as well. More detail on deck and Tower yet too. Then starts the hull detail. Seams, rivets, welds..... . Getting there!

To answer you question, I live in northeast Bavaria in the province of the Oberpfalz near the town of Amberg. I live slightly less then a 2 hour drive from Munich. Hi Dan, I know Snyder and Short has that color in there range of Kriegsmarine paints. Their paints can be brought from several different retailers. Vallejo's color 898 (Dark Sea Blue) is also a very close match to Blauschwartz 58.2. I am at work right now but when I return home this evening I will look at my paint matching program to see if there are more possiblities.

I think they have a colour chip for it, but I don't think Colourcoats has the colour. Let me know when you come up with something.
If you look at the few colour shots of U-505 at the time of capture, the upper hull is very dark. The Conning Tower/ wintergarten is even darker. Dougie sent me some stills he had from the History channel which had from the US Navy.

One more. In this one you can see the dark colours at the time of capture. Kind of makes you wonder what they used for a reference when they repainted U-505 ?

Hi Dan, I looked at the photos and did some greyscale matching with my paint comparison program. Though Blauschwartz 58.2 does not have an RAL number the two that came closest to the photos were RAL9011 (98.8% match) and RAL 9005 (97.6% match). Given the influence of weather, water, sunlight, etc on the appearance and shade of any paint at any time the above is plenty close enough to model an accurate representation IMHO that is.

Following are model paint color matches for the two RAL colors above:
RAL 9011: Revell 8 (100%); Gunze 2 or 12 (94.81%); Modelmaster 2094 or 4795 (94.37); Vallejo 979 (94.30)
RAL 9005: Revell 7 (100%); Gunze 2 or 12 (100%);

You have been a BIG help! I sprayed gloss coat on the hull today in several coats to get it ready for the Archer Surface Detail set. This set is amazing! Even though it is for the Type VII, I have two sets which I can cut and modify to work on the Type IX.

Nothing new in working on a Type IX! I have to modify everything to this model

I did some more work on the Conning Tower. I have the outer railing on now. I am working on the 2.0 cm AA mounts now.

Hi Everyone!
To evert any confusion, my father's first name in Karl. So it's Karl Walter Bauer. I noticed on another U-Boat site they have his last name spelled wrong for U-201, and for some reason they have him listed as dead when U-201 was sunk. So I will try to get that fixed. I didn't even know they had the crew lists of most of the U-boats!
I will have more pics of my progress on my U-505 soon.

Sorry for the poor photos! My camera is not so good ! Anyway, I have most of the deck details done. I am still working on the C Tower and Wintergarten. The deck is painted flat black as was the coating on the deck. I will weather this later. The bow and stern metal decks and hatches will be painted the upper hull colour. I will start working on the hull detail now. I have penciled in the locations of the rivets, welds, and seams. More to come..... It is starting to look like a U-Boot!

Hi Ernest!
It is getting there! I worked on some more detail on the conning tower yesterday. Some more to do yet. I have the railing on the Wintergarten yet. Then the rivets in the sides of the Wintergarten. Then the paint. I think I will have over 300 plus hours on this when I am done!

Talk about what can happen.... I was set up all ready to start painting the upper hull, when I realized my airbrush is all froze up !!!

As they say" Das ist Kaput!! So I had to go to E-Bay and bid on a new airbrush! Well, I won the airbrush!

So now I have to wait for the shipping!

Always something!!!

I will send pics when I get the basic colours on!

I have my new Air Brush now! So now I can get the basic colours on now! Will send photos when I have the Boot painted.

Hello to all!
Great News! U-505 is now finished! I will do alittle weathering but that is it! Tomarrow it goes to it's first show! Enjoy the pictures. It only took 14 months and over 400 hours to complete!
