RCSUBS.CZ Photo Etch Sets for Trumpeter 1/48
« on: 06 Apr , 2018, 03:59 »
Hi
I hope it is Ok to discuss other manufacturers products on here?
If not please remove this post.

I have been talking to Oto Gerza from www.RCSUBS.CZ about which photo etch set to buy for my 1/48 Trumpeter kit.
He has been very helpful but due to the limited English I'm a bit confused about the following. Can anyone put me correct?
Also has anyone used these sets yet?
He has also sent me all his PDF instructions which are excellent.

My question to him was what are the differences between his large etch set SKU0163 other than the fact that it is a very bit etch set and which includes all the decking etc.
And SKU0171 which is a smaller kit and called a 'repair' kit for U-552.

SKU0163 and SKU0171 have some different parts so I assume they are for different submarine versions?
For example the smaller repair kit SKU0171 has an SG radar on the Bow but the larger kit SKU0163 does not?

Confused? ???  Am I missing something very obvious?

His reply below.

"" if you are building the exact version of u-552
so the manufacturer has broken the shapes and holes in the hull of the submarine.
Set 0171 is a complete submarine repair. see instructions on the web.

the set 0163 is the most important and replaces a completely new deck that is then with holes through.
everything sticks to the original deck that is partially removed.""

[Removed info about RCSubs.cz out of respect to AMP.]

Oto Gerza (RCSubs.cz) is not welcome at this site any longer; he was confronted a few years ago about IP (intellectual property) theft of prominent AMP detail sets.

I have used some RCSUBS.CZ sets on my model builds of 1/72 and 1/144 U-boats.
Bear in mind they are designed primarily for RC submarines rather than static models.
Typically there are many detailed pieces in the sets, though the brass tends to be very thin.
(That poses a problem for PE decks for modellers looking to straight-out replace the entire plastic deck... proper support structures must be designed by the modeller.)

The instructions are fairly basic, usually complete, but sometimes unclear.
As time has passed, his sets have more & more detail, and the instructions are getting better.

The target audience is advanced model builders who have experience with advanced scratchbuilding techniques; beginner modellers would likely find it very difficult to use the sets.

With all that being said, Oto Gerza is not very welcome at this site any longer; he was confronted a few years ago about IP (intellectual property) theft of prominent AMP detail sets.

Thanks Glenn. I didn't know this history with Dougie and Oto, very interesting.
IP is very hard to protect now-days and frustrating.
On a side note (and Im not justifying anyone who steals IP) if manufacturers are attempting to make a kit 100% accurate wouldn't 2 manufacturers kits be identical? I guess the designers can tell the subtle differences?

QUESTION

Looking at AMP site I don't think they do 1/48th etch for Trumpeter?
There isn't much choice I think after Eduard and Oto?
Anyone know of any other 1/48th Trumpeter etch?

thanks

Hi folks,

It is fine to discuss other manufacturers but with one exception. If you don't mind, the AMP forum is not the place to discussion on RCsubs due to the aforementioned issues.

Cheers,

Dougie

I already have the Eduard sets and they are ok but not complete. And the biggest issue is not etch for the wooden deck
Depending if you are looking for a 100% accurate (Eduard is not) or just a nice looking addition to your model. Some parts of their sets are accurate some not but any etch still looks good and Eduard set is good quality.
As the Trumpeter kit is so inaccurate the Eduard set would be the minimum upgrade you should do to enhance

Hello Fillipo,

Sorry but we aren't going to do a set for the Trumpeter kit. This is partly due to lack of time in recent years but also we lost enthusiasm for making full sets due to issues with RCsubs. Also I'm quite enjoying building models rather than just researching.

We might do a Vesikko set if Special Navy finally release it but that will depend upon whether we have the free time when they release it and how good/bad the Vesikko kit is.

Cheers,

Dougie
