Emblems of U-505
« on: 16 Jan , 2014, 11:21 »
While U-505 was under the command of Kptlt. Peter Zschech, the emblem was a "large axe on both sides of the tower" as shown by the picture below.
(Additionally, the Olympic rings were on the front of the tower, too.)

I'd like to confirm some pretty basic things about the axe emblem:
  • Was the axe mirrored on both port & stbd sides of the tower?
  • Was the axe blade facing forwards?
  • Was it approximately the same height & position as the "scallop shell" emblem (under Oblt. Lange)?

Hi Glenn,

1 - I've no evidence because the photo only shows the port side. But it would be highly likely that it was on both sides and be mirrored.
2 - Axe blade forwards.
3 - No it was in the more unusual position of under the spray deflector. I think it was positioned there because of its size (it was big). There wasn't the same amount of space above the spray deflector so I presume thats why they positioned it below.

I would recommend Hunt & Kill, it really is an excellent book and has soem good shot of the boat in wartime.

Cheers,

Dougie

Thank you, Dougie.

I found Hunt & Kill on eBay for a good price, and ordered it.   :D
