scratch-building UZO, Attack Periscope, etc. ????

Hello,
 
Was thinking about trying my hand at doing some scratch-building...mind you about the only time I have done anything like it was wire and such in cockpits & brake lines.
 
I've looked at some great WIPs and I have an idea of what needs to be done...just don't know about how to get going (like what I need...round, tubing sizes, etc).
 
just don't feel like spending $50.00 on the CMK exterior set...i don't think i would use 1/2 of it.
 
any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Tony, not sure if you know, but there two versions of UZO, a early and late war version.

I'm planning on doing U-94 under Otto Ites, so summer 42' would be the latest period I would do.

I am unsure of the switch. The only date I know is 9 May 1945.

Going by how rare the photo's are of the late war UZO, I would say mid 44's

I would say it almost sure the U-94 only had a early war UZO.

Tony, I agree with Simon. There's photographic evidence of U 94 being equipped with the early war UZO. The 2 pictures below were taken on 18 and 26/4/1941, at the time U 94 was commanded by KL Kuppisch, but Otto Ites took over from him on august 1941, some three months later. It's very likely that he served on U 94 when she had the early UZO..anyways am pretty sure U-94 didn't live this long to be equipped with the late war UZO. So go for the early version of it.

The UZO photoetch fret is offered on the german section of ebay. Regarding to the photos below the UZO looks very detailed, seems to be very fiddly to built that. Don't know if the seller provides international delivery (?).

thanks Falo...that looks pretty good (fiddly...but good).  Yeah, the seller only shows shipping for Germany. 
 
I have the PE sets from Eduard & WEM (one or both of those dress it up pretty well...or so Ive read).
I wanted to try making one out of styrene tubing, brass wiring & such,like others have done on this site and elsewher in there WIPs/Build Logs.
 
The 1st U-Boat I build was straight OOB...this one I wanted to try some knew stuff.
 
I might just add the PE to the kit UZO & Attack Periscope & see how that comes out...that's probably more to my skill set anyway...just wanted to try something new.

all that you need is styrene tubing and brass/copper rod of the proper caliber plus some brass or styrene sheeths (check drawings and blueprints and translate them into 1:72 scale to get the right dimensions of the accessories to use).
The only thing is that when you start scratchbuilding you never stop, it's highly addictive!

The same seller is selling the type IX rear drainage photoetch and will post worldwide, if you were really interested in the UZO fret I would message them worse they can say is no.

Thanks Jon...I think I'm going to try scratching it first.  Then if it comes out like crap, or I lose my patience, than I'll see about the UZO fret.  Although I do think I'll do what you said and ask him if he'll ship to the US & how much.

Just an update...heard back from the seller of the UZO fret that Falo mentioned above & yes he'll ship to the US (2.20 Euro and he'll combine shipping for his other stuff too).
He said he has update frets for 1. complete Conning Tower upgrade, 2. Deck upgrade & 3. Hull upgrade, and sent me a link to his blog and said a few more are on the way he's working on. http://vii-c-turm-upgrade-1.blogspot.de/

His name is Boris and was very nice in his email (just my take anyway).

Anyway.. late U94 (Ites is on turret deck I guess) still had the early war UZO version

Re UZO: it is contains small parts and will requite some patience to assemble.

Forget what i said about the covered UZO, I managed to find out the cheat (retouched pic, below)
