Silent Hunter 5 Info
« on: 20 Jan , 2010, 01:54 »
Not strictly models, but I'm pretty sure many of us here have been through all or many of the Silent Hunter series. Interview with some of the creative team here:

http://www.subsim.com/ssr/sh5/preview_sh5_jan2010.php

The meat of the game is a Type VII with a little role playing and more personal immerse-yourself stuff.

I can not wait. I have spent many hours plaing SH III, and enjoyed it to the max.
Not so much SH IV-  played it few times- not my cup of tea.
Hopefully the new game will be playable straight from the box, without the need for GWX, and other mods.

I am really looking forward to SH5.  I still play SHIII, enhanced by the outstanding GWX Gold mod.  If the gameplay of SH5 matches the graphics it will be a winner.

As much as I love VIIs, I'm a Gato man, sorry, yank at heart. But any of these, yes, it's a pain to have mods, but in some ways, it means fans and players are making the game better, so I like the mods,. Too bad the makers dont "get it right:, but lovely that fans do!

I've only got SH II, and can't afford a new one.

But it seems I've run into a roadblock anyway.  I can't seem to get past the destroyer screens no matter what I do.  As soon as I've fired one 'eel' (as the Germans called them), the destroyers cluster around me and I'm done.

I've tried going beneath the thermal layers.
I've tried stopping.
I've tried silent running.
I've tried flank speed.
I've tried turning to a new course.
I've tried diving deep.
I've tried any combination of the above.
I've tried changing the timing of doing any of the above depending on where the destroyers are.

Nothing seems to work.  I don't know how they did it.

Any suggestions?

Pat, I was going to advise some stuff (like timing and combos) and you got there yourself. It's easiest to play like I do - be a target and get destroyed. Hey, I always meet my goal! ;D

I have SH4 and have hardly played, love the Gatos and the stretch of the game series, but I wish they had gone with a separate Conning Tower and Cntrol Room. Maybe not so important in a VIIC, but it ruined the Gato. I understand changes for gameplay, but I like my sims real!

Anxiously awaiting 5.

ROTFL.  Yes, going in planning to be a target definitely meets your goal and makes you a winner.

Another way would be to go out, find the enemy, and then just return to base without risking a shot.  At least you'd advance to the next mission.

One coincidence when I started the campaign I'm on (and can't seem to survive to mission #8), is that the first Allied ship I sunk (not counting the Polish destroyers) was a lone cruiser with the same name as my own boat.

Hmmmm, maybe I should print off a photo of her and put it up in the 'Commander's cabin' on my boat?

Hi Siara

I see in the Gold Edition and maybe the Collector's Edition you will get to see your old friend ;D

The Gold Edition will be available for download only and will contain seven unique submarines and enemy ship skins. The Gold Edition will also include the Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic Official Guide containing 110 pages of crew details, submarines, ships and weapons as a pdf on the build. Silent Hunter is the most award-winning submarine series of all time, with nearly 1.5 million copies sold worldwide. Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific made a lasting solid impact on the franchise

I can not wait for the new SH to arrive.

Hopefully the mod-makers will whip up some goodies, as good as SH5 will be, the amazing community out there will make it better! I'm still playing SH4, I better get my rear in gear!

Thanks for the news NZ!

Looking at a 05 March release date in Germany.  I going to buy it, though I am not thrilled with the DRM requirements.  I agree that the modders are going to have a good time with this one!

Pat- best way of dealing with destroyers is to stay away from them.
This is exactly what Doenitz sait to his boys. Do not risk the boat, and your a**e.
The torps were not designed to work on anything with hulls submerged less than 4m.
I know the magnetic torpedo was to change it, but in reality most of them didnt work anyway- especially the early batch.
Sink the lone merchies, and avoid the big boys, and you may just get lucky, and survive the war- i never did.
The furthest i went was late 1943 with well over 100.ooo t of sunk allied steel (full real, with GWX gold, manual targetting, and star navigation- when i had time  ;))

Siara is right....keep far far away from destroyers ;D I played with GWX gold till about very late 1944 and the only way I stay alive was to be scared of everything ;D

Can not remember what book I read it in, but the first month after they got the G7s T5 Torpedoe (The Zaunk

That is good advice. The point is to cripple the heat anyway, supplies.

yet it would be silly not to mention the other logic...take out the wolves, and the sheep are yours.

Yes, rokket, that logic is also inescapable.

Yesterday, I played the "Shadow" scenario, where you have to trail a convoy reporting its position every hour until you can lead a wolfpack to it.  After 8 hours, you're free to attack.

Well, I had the chance to get the 'wolves' and it worked.  I then used up all torpedos sinking freighters and tankers until I was out, and the convoy was scattering straight towards the waiting wolfpack.  I was staying behind to wait until any armed merchants were far enough ahead that I could surface to finish off a couple of heavily damamged ships that just wouldn't sink.

All of a sudden, my totally undamaged U-boat started leaking without warning.  No collision.    No depth charges.  No shots fired (I was still at periscope depth).  She sank before I could blow ballast so back to the start again.

It must have been about the 10th time I'd tried that scenario and the first where I'd actually seemed to have a chance of winning it.

And the convoy was going to be toast when it got to the wolfpack too!  I'd already sunk 10 ships and including all the escorts.

Spotted the Silent Hunter V in local game shop this morning.
Selling at HK$300 (28.4 Euro)

Unfortunate that no limited ed. or collector's ed. available locally.

Is there a hard copy manual for the SH V?
