question about U-510
« on: 29 Sep , 2015, 18:41 »
Hello All,

after taking a bit of a break, I was about to start on my type IX C (1/72 Revell) and would like to build U-510 on their 5th Patrol to Penang from 3 Nov 43' - 5 Apr 44'.
after reading Dougie's articles, am i correct in assuming i could build it OOB without modifications to represent U-510 during that 5th Patrol?
I've looked for pictures, etc. but I came up empty.

thanks so much  :)

Hi cola,

Short answer, no.

U 510 was one of the monsun boats and had a 10.5cm deck gun until the end of the war.
You could fit the Edward 10.5cm gun that is now available in it's corrected size.
A spare 3.7cm barrel container was fitted on the port side.
The drain vents below the exhaust and the exhaust itself are different and the U 510 did not have a balcongerat.

As I only have 1 picture of the port side I cannot comment on any differences on the starboard side.

Cola, Jon,
I have a starboard picture of U510 as the post-war french Bouan: still retaining the 10.5 cm deck gun, 3.7 cm barrel container on the starboard side of the tower also. I'll post the pic as soon as i can
Cheers
SG

Hey Jon & SG,

so if I made it a waterline build (which is my intention)...the only thing I would need is the 105 Deck Gun and the 3.7 cm barrel containers, correct?

Please forgive my ignorance, but what are the  3.7 cm barrel containers?

thanks,

Tony

Hi cola,

They are the tubes either side of the tower, just below the upper platform, not a big problem.
The only other problem is the vent pattern and exhaust.
See arrows on picture.

Thanks SG...that actually doesn't look that difficult to scratch build. Truth be told, I never really scratch built anything...the closest is wires, cockpit detail, brake lines etc on planes, and opening up the flood holes & plastic card and stuff.

Hi cola,

For the second 3.7cm barrel container you could ask Revell for a replacement part.
The vents and exhaust pose a most difficult problem to replicate, the two options being, ignore the differences or delve into the world of scratch building, the choice is always the builders.

I never thought about asking Revell for a replacement part...that would be great....thanks!
Still kind of debating whether or not I want to do this one though.

Hello Helmut,

From the information on page 26 of Vom original zum Modell: IXC by Koehl and Niestle the vents and exhaust were the same on U 510 as on U 505. I don't have photos to confirm this but the book is a reliable source.

Cheers,

Dougie
