U-Boat lookout towers
« on: 21 May , 2010, 19:09 »
I moved to Delaware last July about 2 miles from the coast. This is just one of many "lookout" towers that dot the beaches along the coast. Still well preserved after many years. Matter of fact I'm not far from where U-868 surrendered . The first one to do so at the end of the war.

Beautiful photo Bill.  Looks like the perfect place to set up a chair and read Dougie's "Wolf Pack" .pdf.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad everyone is enjoying this post. Actually I've read that these towers were not only "lookout" stations, but they were also used for fire control for a 16" gun. From what I can gather these towers would triangulate a target up to 25 miles out at sea. The shell would take up to 58 seconds to reach it. I haven't read, though, if it was ever used. The area around here had quite a bit of u-boat activity mainly because of convoy assembly points and the navy ship yard just a little north in Philladelphia.
                               Cheers/Regards  Bill
