VIIF

Has anyone done research on, or attempted to build a VIIF (either in 1/72 or 1/144)?This was a torpedo resupplier, yes?
From what I can tell at a quick glance of a vector image side view (comparing different VII boats):

• same length hull as VIID minelayer
• similar tower as VIIC/41 (with lower rear bandstand)
• no deck gun
• no mine bunker
• forward deck has 4 lifeboat hatches (like VIIC/41)
• different layout of main flooding channel (above bulging saddletanks)... and there is a shroud/covering?

I am wondering what it would take to convert a kit... a VIID and VIIC/41 kit to start, but then what?
At this point, this is purely an information-gathering discussion, to see if it is a worthwhile project.

Hi Glenn.
I was at some point thinking that conversion too. The hull is quite easy to do with Special Navy VIID conversion set. In 1/72 scale of course...Maybe the biggest difference is the deck layout. I'll bet it's hard to find how they planned and built the torpedo loading hatches. Interesting project... I'll be watching if you might start it some day...

Hi Anakin,
I reached out to RCsub.cz to see if they had a VIIF set in the works... but so far, no joy.There is a serious lack of info on the deck & tower layout, which is critical for a proper build.
If we could all reach out to various sources to find VIIF imagery, deck layout drawings, etc. it would be a good start.

War time images could be hard to find. If there are any proper ones... I can't remember if U-boot im focus series had any drawn pictures     I do have some german language 2 part book serie, so i could search them through. Maybe this weekend

I have first 2 of those pics too on my hdd. The deck with torpedo rails looks interesting. Some information i've found about VIIF boats:

-It's 10,5 meters longer than VIIC, and the hull is 1,1m wider than VIIC. (in 1:72 scale it's 14,6cm and 1,4cm) That means the VIID conversion kit is not correct by size. Maybe with new deck one might get close enough...
-U-1059 didn't have a schnorkel. U-1060, 1061 and 1062 had schnorkels.

I've been working last 15 days now so i haven't got energy to search the diagrams or blueprints... But i will soon as i get some free from work.

Anakin-Cool overhead pic of the tower. It has armor boxes! I've been looking for pics of those for mine. That's the first really good overhead shot I've seen, especially of the Port box.
