Title: VII/C-41 U-1023
Post by: Nevermind4712 on 13 Oct , 2011, 01:25
Hi Guys:),

First,..sorry about my English , i come from Germany and the last years i didnt speak it so much but i hope you understand me:).

I want to build the "U-1023" with the Revell-Kit but first i need some Informations and i think im here on the right Place to get it:).

My first "Problem" are the Floodholes over the Saddletanks.

I see there a difference to the Kit, ok,...for the front is this not a great Problem, something to fill and thats it

But what is with the back?
On the Pic it looks that the long Floddhole (what is the right Name in english?) goes longer around the Curve from the Saddletank as in the Kit is.

There i need a Tip what i have to do there

and i really hope you can read my english without a headache:).

Greetings from berlin
Roland

Hallo Roland, welkommen an bord!  Ihr Englisch ist gut und niemand hier wird ein Problem beim Lesen haben.  Weil mein geschriebenes Deutsch nicht so gut ist, scheibe den Rest in Englisch.

To find the answers to your questions click on the link that reads, "CLICK HERE to go to AMP website" on the upper right side of this webpage.  Once at that webpage scroll down to the section entitled "DOCUMENTS", which is blue in color.  Under that you will see "U-BOATS"; click on that word.  On the page that displays scroll down to the following article:

" The Wolf Pack: A Collection Of U-Boat Modelling Articles".  You can either click on the picture that looks like the cover of a book or download the 6mb Adobe document.  Among the great information in the article is a chapter that covers free flooding patterns on Type VIIc uboats.  It is very good and should be able to answer your question.

MfG,
Ernest

Next week comes the next update, im really slow;)

Glad you found the document eventually! Welcome aboard!

Here are some closeups. The 3 holes that curve at the end of the saddle tank are too big on my model, but it gives an idea.

Hello Roland, here you can check the U-1023 I finished building this year: http://models.rokket.biz/index.php?topic=119.150
I hope to see further progress soon!

Hi:),

Thx for your answers!!:).

@rokket

Thx for the Pics, i read in the moment EVERYTHING about from the VII/C in this Board and i know that i can happe if i reach 50% of this quality:\.
..and now i know what i can make with one Figure from the Hecker& Goros Set for the Boat;)..thx for your Pics:).

@bracco.

Your Boat is really awesome, i read it too,..but i dont think i can make the same, you build a lot of scratch...not my World i guess:\.
Pics from my Progress?.
I think is maybe a little bit early,..im sanding and sanding and shape and shape;).

But i make some Photos that you can see what  kind of a Boat i like to build.

First i cut of the Side, the U-1023 have a straight Side without a Curve and Handrails, is not finish yet.

Here i open the Floodholes and than i glue a Sheet behind, because,..the last 3 probably closed at the U-1023
Have to sand something,..dont look on Details;)

Here i start to give the Hull a little bit structure, the Rivets have all to remove later, i take than the Set from Archer.
The Area around the Saddletanks looks on the Pic not as real, have to make some better Pics than you see the structure.

Here the start from the conning Tower, the marked Door have to removed (or the other?..have to take a look in my Books), this was the Door for the ammo for the 8,8 but this VII/C didnt have one and no door for the Ammo.
The Floodholes have to be closed and than to drill round Holes.
The Holes for the Lifecraftcontainers comes later.

And here i have a little Problem.
The marked hole is for the Typhon (whatever this it), but have this Boat this Hole?
The Hole in the middle have to be closed, this is Fact, but this one?

I see a lot of work and if i reach 50% historical correctness,..im happy:)

Edit:

And a really important Question, the inside from The Tower looks like the "normal" VII/C, or?.
I mean the Sidewalks around and Instruments in front.

Post by: Nevermind4712 on 19 Oct , 2011, 01:04
Little Update:).

I decided to close the Hole, because..there some Boats with and without the Hole and i didint find a Pic from the U-1023 where to see what this Boat for a Option have.

In the Middle from the Tower i take a little Brasstube and Sheet to simulate this Tube,..is this okay?...what you think about?

Than is here the original from Revell:

Sidewalks are false and its very hard to sand the Container with this round in the middle to put later PE on this.
This is my Way.

First i glue the under Side on it after i cut it from the Revell-Sidewalk, than sand it down and put a Gap in the middle:

Than a Brasstube:

..and after filling the Gaps with Magic-Sculp and sanding is here the Result:

Dont look at the Sidewalks,..there comes another in:)
I think that i get the next Days some PE,..than it would be intresting.

...and sorry about my English:\

Hey,..thx for the Comments!:)

Im a really slow modeler, because...i work in a Hospital and this means 12 Hours a Day, 7/8 Days work, one Day free and so on,and so on;).
But tomorrow is free and hopefully some Days next week and you see more.

@NZSNowman

Jup..i know that Pic,..i have now 4 Pics from U-1023 and i hope it is enough to get a Result:\.

Ok,..little Progress, i think tomorrow Evening i can show you more.

First is make the Handrail for the Conning Tower/inside.

For the woodplanks i used the PE-Parts from YankeeModelworks, think is okay.

I reworked this Parts from the Tower now,..i know i can make it better:).
Next Update you see it i think:)

Ok..i switch to the Hull,..time for PE:).

This are the Stars from today:

I start with the back, i bend carfully after i glow out over a fire (right english?).

Than open the hull, put it in.
I try to fix with Magic-Sculp but on the other Side i take another Way.

Than filling, sanding and a Layer with Colour to look where i have to do something.
I have to fill some Gaps and sanding but is not much work and i think is okay than.

Ok...Front, same Procedure but i didnt use Magic-Sculp to fix.
I glue small Evergreen-Strips inside that the PE are in a correct Position, than CA

Here i need only a little bit Surfacer and a little bit fine Sanding and finish:)

Ok,..both sides with the Original, i see a little Difference:).

Ok..next..the Saddletanks have in front a wrong form, he have to look like the back.

First i take my Proxxon and sanding the front that the Putty can hold.
Than i roll a little bit Magic-Sculp to get the Form what i need and pu than Layers from the Sculp if i think that is enough.
In this fall was much to much but is my first time i try to modelling something in this Form:)

..after some Hours of sanding (pls remind me that i didnt take so much Sculp on the other Side)

I have there to sand something, some corrections and than Surfacer but i think is okay,..or?

Ok,.tell me what you mean and what i can make it better:)

Thx a lot for response:)

I change know to the Conning Tower ( the Hull need a little break;) )

Here are the PE from Eduard (grey) and YKM (gold), there are for the Ladders and Handrails outside.
I use the Eduard PE, YKM is to big and i have to fill and sand the holes because the Revellrails/ladders are 1mm but i want to use 0,5mm copperwire.

Now the Hatches for the Outside.
Eduard want that you fold and glue,..i like it more to fold and soldering.

Than i fixed the Hatch with Tape and make a mark through this long hole, after that i drill the markes area out (bad pic,..i know:\ )

Than glue the Hatch at the Tower and if you look through the hole,..you see nothing,..only Darkness and you dont need a Pinwash:).

The hatch have to be higher as in the Revellkit because there are a "Pipline" at U-1023 (early Snorkel), if we let the Hatch in the original Position you cant open it.

Ok,..thats it for today, i think at the next Update the lower Structure is finish with Rails, Ladders, Rivets and welds:)

And now i need Help pls.

On this Pic there are the left Side different as in the Kit, i marked with 1.
Have someone a Pic from a Boat from the left Side so that i can see what i have to rebuild?.

And what this for Piplines at the end??? (marked as 2.)

Thanks a lot :)

Thx for the Pic NzSnowman:).

But was the Tube not fixed or it was transportable?.

@rokket
Me too,..is sometimes easier and not so expensive as CA;)

But another Question.

Here the Sideview.

The black line is a weldline, the red are Rivets.
Front isnt a Problem, the same as the normal VII/C.
But what is with the back?.

If i take the same line as the front it looks...crap?.
Was there a middle line of rivets or only vertical lines?.

I didnt find a Pic from a c-41 where i can see it:\

What would you do in this Question? ???

Edit:

And have someone seen a Pic or a Plan with this two Doors (red marked) at a VII/C-41??.
I start in the Moment to believe this Boat didnt have this Doors ???

Those hatches certainly don't appear on the artworks of the VIIC/41 by Waldemar Goralski nor on the technical profiles by Kagero. Am gonna hunt for pictures and tell you asap.

I believe there are only vertical rivets on the casting for the lower and upper wintergarten. The spacing is at 500 mm or 7 mm at 1:72 scale. I also think it the same for the bridge casting.

Not sure about the riveting and hatches on the bridge casting as not done any research in this area of the boat yet.

Spare gun barrel tube was fixed to the boat.

About the two hatches on the lower wintergarten on turm 4, I had a quick look and found the forward hatch of the two hatches on U-1105 (A type VIIC/41), so it look like one of the two hatches were used. I will need to do more research in to this.

Im really uncertainly about this hatches.
Here is a Pic from U-1023.

Short Handrail and a very, very small deck at the Place where the Hatches normally there.
At the Sea it was to dangerous to go through the Hatches because a really high risk to go over board.
In the Harbour for a Worker the same Problem...no Handrail and a very small Deck.

Can it be that the Boats with the curved Deck have this Hatches and the Boats without not?.

I think i build it without, is logical in my Eyes because the using of the hatches is to dangerous.

The feel that the hatch is on U-1023 also, it just too hard to see it. Going by the other hatches, the seams are very tight and very hard to see. I could only see the hatch on U-1105 because of the Alberich coating. But like I said I have not research this area of the u-boat. I will check all my pictures now and see what I found.

So this may suggest the hatch was not that important

I think the same, i build it without this hatches:).

Ok,...little Update:

Here is the Container for the antenna:

..and here the Part from the Kit...a "little" Difference:\.

at this Pics you can see that some from the little Floadholes are closed, i try to get the form from the Original...think is okay.

Ok...and now i do this.
First i glue some Sheet and cut a little bit in the right form.

Than comes MagicSculp (love this Stuff!)

Than dry and sanding,..and than you get this:

I have to rework a little bit at the bottom and top but than is okay i think:)

..and a little break to the lower structure....Rivets.

Bad work and not perfect but i think with colour we dont see sooo much mistakes:).

Tell me what i can make better plz:)

It can be a Horror, believe me ;D

Than today is my "bad hair day"

The Reling was together with the Ladder (like the "normal" VII/C), is see this now.

But is okay,..i was with my work not 100% happy, i got enough rivets, Time and start from begin:).

I sand off the Socket and build a new with a Strip, looks better and is better definied.
And i build now something different and hope i get a better result.

We see this tomorrow ;D

Are those Archer rivets? Looks like black dots but are they real...  I am really thinking to buy a rivet set because i had to sand some rows of my boats.

I bought a set of Archer's rivets and weld seams, and they are amazing. I was a little miffed to discover that there are only enough in the kit to partially replace lost rivets, no all of them.

Ok,..little Update, im a really slow Modeler,..i know;)

First i reworked the complete Lower Structure, the Floodholes have now a smaller Diameter, Rivets new and so on, and so on..., this need around 12 hours.

I have to fix some little Mistakes but its not much;)

Ok,..here is one Platform.
The Original from the Kit doesnt looks really like the Original,..here my Solution.

...after a long, long While with sanding:

Now we need a new band at the outside.

and now a dry fit with the wooden deck:

The next step ist to put little Pieces of Brass tube (0,5mm outside, 0,3mm inside) at the outside, there can be later the Rails go in.
But this is a thing from the next Update:)

and have someone a Pic from the AA-Rails???

Ok,..im lazy but here a little Update:)

Same Procedure with the other Deck from the Tower

But now we have here some Holes

I used this from my last work at a wooddoor in my Home

And this is the Result, but carfully sanding, really carfully,..really sensible;)

Than i try some washes, filters with Oilcolours, Acrylcolours and everything what i find and this is the Result.

To get a darker look is used than this:

Ok,..than is use a Brasstube with 0,5mm outside and 0,3mm inside diameter where later comes the Reling in.
Bad Pic but i hope you see enough.

Need some tuning with Surfacer but is not a great Prob,..and i hate macro!!:\.

The Canal for the rope from the Snorkel, i reworked the Hatches from Eduard, this Boats have different Hinges as in the Set, i make them later with a Brasstube.
The Canal looks not straight, but it is... i think later looks okay.

Here you see the Containers, some work is to do and is REALLY hate Macropics:(.

and a little Dryfit...it works!!... i was really surprised about!:)

Ok,..tell me your meaning and give me your Tipps:)

Wooden floor is superbly rendered, I like the idea of adding the brass tube sections to contain the wintergarden railing! getting the rid of those printed holes mustnt have been easy, but it was really worth the effort.

In this Moment is ask myself HOW your Guys put this thing in,..looks sooo easy and i try and try and try and looks crap:(

Ok,..than the Horror,..there was a edge on the Top,..dont know how it comes (think it comes up befor the glue was dry).

Ok...i decides to fill and sanding because i was really feary that i destroy the Doors if i start from the begin.
next negative was that i kill the Surfacedetails,...but doesnt matter,..is a little Problem.
The other Problem was that i try "oilcanning" and i lose in this theme:(

Ok,..than fill the gaps and start this new,..only from hand with sanding,..think is better:)

First the Doors,..after around 2 Days and 10 Times filling and sanding...much better:)

Start to get the Pressure Hull a kind of Structure and reworked some Strips.

Start to fill the "oilcanning" and sanding, put a missing strip on.

Ok,.now it looks a little bit better:)

No need to panic, you will only need to (if you want to) change the towing eye and a the small section of foredeck right next to the bow.  I will draw it up over chirstmas, As I will add it to U-1308.

Ok,..it need a little bit more Time for a Update...but 2 Appetizer:)
I rework in the Moment the Kiosk form the CT

Not finish yet but only a Pic from the moment:)

The Photoetch from the Vent looks for me to much like a PE.
Than i sand the Box a little bit down, PE on it and than some Strips, think looks much better (but its not finish yet!)

And the Hull, much mistakes and not the quality what i want.

The hole for the Exhaust are wrong, i need another Part from the PE-Set.
I decide to make the complete Hull new and wait now of the Parts from Revell.

I make there to much mistakes, think i want to fast e Result,..ok...im learning on it:)
The next Days comes the next Update from the CT:)

Happy new Year and happy modelling:)
