That's a Portsmouth boat. Easily converted to a Tench. That's exactly what I've been looking for. I bought one awhile back, but never opened the box. I figured it was just an upgrade of their early Gato.
That means the 1:72 Gato and Type VII go on hold, 1:200 Arizona goes into stand-by and the 1944 Gato gets opened.
So many models, so little time.

Well said Mike. My airship needs some engine work, really not much to do except fiddley stuff, but I need to restore the damaged Gato bow...and then in the future is the 1:32 Corsair, with multi others behind...
The boat look nice, esp. for a small scale.

Glad it helped ! and Trumpeter is generous with the plastic thickness ; a great base if you have time...
The Gato/Tench/... class deserves details, or the model will look like a shaved beard ZZtop.
Now you have one more model on the work bench, sorry... ;D

Yes it does, but the typVIIC/41 from the same scale is smaller and much more attractive... ;)

Lots of photos of Gato at Navsource, and lots of plans of her at the Floating Drydock.
The kit is far more accurate for the Gato in 1943, as these photos show: http://navsource.org/archives/08/100/0821246.jpg and http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/0821240.jpg . By 1944, she had received the covered wagon bridge cut down, but in 1943 she was pretty much the same as the kit, deck gun notwithstanding.
The 1944 model isn't a Tench out of the box, Mike, if that's what you meant. She still has the Electric Boat D-shaped limber holes. They just added some extras to Gato in refits.

It's funny ho they went wild with trying to vent trapped air in the hull casing: add a few holes, add a few more, and by 1945 the roundover are perforated like that shot, and she had a sort of Portsmouth Limber pattern, pluss some extra, just everywhere they could put 'em!
