Title: Photos of the real U 557
Post by: dougie47 on 10 Mar , 2009, 15:28
Hi guys,

As most of you will know, U 557 was the subject of Wink Grise's VIIC model. But finding photos of the real boat was extremely difficult. However, a batch of photos is on auction at present. The three images below all show the same boat.

This one shows the slat grill on the SIDE of the tower (this narrows it down to U 69 to U 72, U 93 to U 98, or U 551 to U 557)-

In the image below you can see the flooding holes are the Blohm & Voss style -

Given the Blohm & Voss flooding hole pattern AND the slat grill, it should be between U 551 and U 557.

The image below shows the insignia -

The only boat to have this insignia (the sponsor city of Duesseldorf) between U 551 and U 557 was U 557.

Could these images show U 557 at Kiel in early 1941? Does anybody have any other possibilities?

There are a few more images that are probably of the same boat. Just look under foto060.

Cheers,

Dougie

GRRRRRRRR!!!

Well, it could be U557, there's certainly more evidence for than against. Interesting that the emblem is dual (presumably) and on an angle! I put mine fwd in the ctr, but if I had put it on the side I would have put it straight. That one tower close up shows the early spray deflector, and the gun deck "sponsons" (USN talk) wave-breaks. If only I'd had these before...

Wow, thanks Dougie

Hi Siara,

Nice quality. Did you buy them from Ebay? If so, particular thanks for posting them.

The horse I think is a sister boat U 559. But thanks for posting that one as it is better quality than the one I had before.

Cheers,

Dougie
