Revell/Germany is developing a 1/72 Type XXI
« on: 11 Jan , 2016, 08:54 »
Good day Gentlemen....

I have received confirmation that REVELL/Germany is currently developing a 1/72 Type XXI U-boat.

They haven't stated a definite release date (yet), but it's definitely in the works.   ;D

Here's one.....

And, here's a copy of the e-mail reply I got from them, when I asked if they planned to produce a 1/72 Type XXI .... ;)

Dear Robert,
first of all we wish you and all your family a happy new year. Many thanks for your mail and your request, which we can answer very short: Yes, we are. It´s only a question of time, when we do this, you know it´s a quite big and expensive project, so it will take it´s time. There are only three really popular sub types, the VII and the IX we still did, there is only the XXI left. And this project is still done by 50 %, when we did the smaller 1/144 version. In a few years you will find the Type XXI as a new item in our range.

Hi All,

Fingers crossed we get a Type XXI and not the Wilhelm Bauer in one of its many guises.

Time to build that extension!

Yeah....I think REVELL would be getting a swarm of angry e-mails, if that happened.

Not to mention sales of a 1/72 Wilhelm Bauer would be extremely poor. Even if that was the only XXI in 1/72 they ever released, I still would have zero interest. Too much conversion work. I cannot imagine them investing the resources into something that no one wants.
One thing that is telling about their email, is that they consider there to be only three popular subs, the VII, IX and XXI. So I doubt we'll ever see anything like a Type X or XIV from Revell. Unless some other company releases the kits, and Revell picks up the molds, as they did from Tehnoart with the Type IXC and IXC/40.
But back to their 1/72 Type XXI. If it is indeed a wartime version I will be totally onboard with supporting their investment..

Well, you should have plenty of time, as this one is probably several years away from release..

A War time Type XXI would be very welcome.  The Wil. Bauer not so much. If they did the Bauer. It would take some major rework to get it back to WW 2.

Forgive my ignorance... but what are the differences between a wartime XXI and the 'Wilhelm Bauer' boat?

What would have to be done to a 'Wilhelm Bauer' boat to make it a WW2 boat... how much effort?

When she was raised at 1957 she was modified to the bundesmarine research boat. Mainly the CT was modified.

So converting Bauer back to war time XXI might be possible but a painful job. I think i'll have that1/144 Bauer somewhere in my closet...

Happy (belated) New Year to you and everyone at Revell GbmH Germany.  :)
I understand that you are developing a 1/72 Type XXI... that's great news!

Will you please confirm that the new model will be a wartime XXI,
and NOT be the 'Wilhelm Bauer' boat.
(If the latter, apparently a lot of effort would be required to convert it into a wartime boat.)

Hi, Glenn, many thanks for your mail, but what you say is not quite correct:
Correct is, if we develop the next 1/72 scale sub, then it´s only the XXI, nothing else.
This is the only one missing but important type we have to do.
And also right now for sure, to increase the sales numbers, we have to come out
also with the actual "Wilhelm Bauer", not for your market, but for the German market
the actual museum version is very important. And in general we have to create as many as possible
versions out of the basic mold of a new item to make the investment significant.
Otherwise - no chance. It´s nearly impossible to calculate any new project with one version only.

Wilhelm Bauer as it is today looks more like war time xxi. They restored it quite well so i'm fine with that. I guess they are right that it sell better if the model is identical to the museum boat.
