Pat- best way of dealing with destroyers is to stay away from them.
This is exactly what Doenitz sait to his boys. Do not risk the boat, and your a**e.
The torps were not designed to work on anything with hulls submerged less than 4m.
I know the magnetic torpedo was to change it, but in reality most of them didnt work anyway- especially the early batch.
Sink the lone merchies, and avoid the big boys, and you may just get lucky, and survive the war- i never did.
The furthest i went was late 1943 with well over 100.ooo t of sunk allied steel (full real, with GWX gold, manual targetting, and star navigation- when i had time  ;))

Siara is right....keep far far away from destroyers ;D I played with GWX gold till about very late 1944 and the only way I stay alive was to be scared of everything ;D

Can not remember what book I read it in, but the first month after they got the G7s T5 Torpedoe (The Zaunk

That is good advice. The point is to cripple the heat anyway, supplies.

yet it would be silly not to mention the other logic...take out the wolves, and the sheep are yours.

Yes, rokket, that logic is also inescapable.

Yesterday, I played the "Shadow" scenario, where you have to trail a convoy reporting its position every hour until you can lead a wolfpack to it.  After 8 hours, you're free to attack.

Well, I had the chance to get the 'wolves' and it worked.  I then used up all torpedos sinking freighters and tankers until I was out, and the convoy was scattering straight towards the waiting wolfpack.  I was staying behind to wait until any armed merchants were far enough ahead that I could surface to finish off a couple of heavily damamged ships that just wouldn't sink.

All of a sudden, my totally undamaged U-boat started leaking without warning.  No collision.    No depth charges.  No shots fired (I was still at periscope depth).  She sank before I could blow ballast so back to the start again.

It must have been about the 10th time I'd tried that scenario and the first where I'd actually seemed to have a chance of winning it.

And the convoy was going to be toast when it got to the wolfpack too!  I'd already sunk 10 ships and including all the escorts.

Spotted the Silent Hunter V in local game shop this morning.
Selling at HK$300 (28.4 Euro)

Unfortunate that no limited ed. or collector's ed. available locally.

Is there a hard copy manual for the SH V?
