My new project.
BMW R75 with the sidecar of SS Grossdeutschland on eastern front.
I started with the tyres.

After initial sanding:

Tyres ready. 3 are more used, while the one on the right is spare:

Hi Siara. I was just wondering that the height and width of the model? & good luck with the build :)

Hi Siara. I was just wondering that the height and width of the model? & good luck with the build :)
I dont know exactly the size of the complete thing, but heres the picture of the sidecar gondola against the CT:
Its big!
-
:o :o :o :o :o WOW!!! It a little bigger than I thought...There should be lots of room at add heap of detail ;D
Imagine doing a 1/9 scale of a Type VII ;D Over the weekend I change my drawing from a 1:60 to 1:43 ;D
-
I looked at the wheels, and something wasnt right:
The spokes are crossing each other:
Decided to scratch build the spokes.
I needed to make the workbench.
After long, and hard thinking i drilled the hole in the Tamiya primer top:
Inside the styrene tube- size bigger than the hole was glued in.
The length of the tube is identical with the inside ring of the primer top:
The stabiliser was glued in- it rests on the inside ring.
Round the hole another piece of styrene was glued in to keep things steady:
Brass tube was glued in to form the axis.
On the top ring made from CD was glued on.
Another bit- slightly thicker was glued to the base of the tube to keep things steady when the spokes are removed:
Bottom part of the rim in place:

Spokes.
This is the most time consuming part of the project, but one which makes all the difference between good model, and the great.
Picture of the break up of the wheel assembly:
...and the first trials of making the spokes from the craft pins.
Each pin needs to be reshaped to required size, and correct diameter.
Theres 160 spokes to be made for 4 wheels.
TBC...
-
Going by the picture of wheel assembly, do you have the manual for the BMW R75? If you do, I imagine it would be very useful.
And good luck with all 160 spokes ;D
-
I do have a original 1940 manual, plus lot of other publications like: spare parts catalogs, books about motorcycles in Wehrmacht service, german motorcycles in WW II, couple of books about the Grossdeutchland division, books about the infantry men, and uniforms- it should all come handy. ;)
-
How did you find a original 1940 manual?
-
How did you find a original 1940 manual?
Internet is the powerful tool. ;)
Did i write 1940? Obviously it should be 1941. My mistake. In 1940 the R75 was still in the development stage.
Shot of the cover:

Spokes....well, I should have guessed you'd be up for a project like that Siar! Standing by for more great pix of great work!
-
I will try not to disapoint you all. ;)
The day isnt long enough for me, with so many things id like to do in my man cave...
I just bought this today:
I dream of the day when i win he lottery, and can spend the day after day working on the models.
I get the feeling im wasting my time in my day job. >:(
-
80 longer spokes done:
Another 80 short spokes, and im done.
-
siara ' very nice job on the spokes ladd.! nice manual too. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
In the meantime i managed to get hold of the vintage rider figure.
It wasnt easy to find the figure from the eighties, but i found one in Columbia MO.
...and some body parts for the second figure from my polish friend from sister forum.
Layout will look like this:
The BMW rider will be reaching for the cigarette offered by the "chained dog" standing by the kerb.
Cobblestone street, possibly with the tram line in the background, and single street lamp ( i hope to make it working with LED bulb).
Lot of sculpting will be required, but im looking forward to this project.
-
This will be awesome! I really love the figure detail, goggles and all! Can't wait to see progress!
-
Small update from the workshop.
The spokes have been cut, and the hubs turned using the tool i made from 3 different diameter brass tubes.

WOW! So, how did you make the nipples? They are a perfect slip fir it seems to the needles/pins. Brass tubes?
Yes- the right diameter of brass tube. Lately ive been using this kind of material for some of the models, and find it great fun to work with.
Heres the little WIP on some secret project of late:

Im still searching for the inspiration to do the rigging on the U-552, and i delayed the BMW R75 project, untill the Kettenwagen is done.
I dont wonna bodge the rigging, after spending almost 2 years building the boat, and the break is needed sometimes to start again with new enthusiasm.
Latest from the Kettenwagen factory :

Unfortunately the Friul tracks i have bought for this project are slightly wider than the Magic tracks from Dragon set i have based my measurements on, and the mudguards are not wide enough. ::)
So im rebuilding the mudguards right now:

Thats Tamiyas Kubelwagen typ 82 modified to fully tracked vehicle- my vision of what could have been. Im no expert in mechanical part of the build, like suspension, or drive mechanism- im only interested in the overall shape of the thing. I didnt like the look of prototype VW tracked designs.
-
siara' great creation ladd . krupp needed you 68 years ago mate . i have been so busy working i have had no time to get any work done on anything in the shop . but the 4th of july is coming up so i get 1 day off . big f-----g deal right . anyway hope you and all the ladds out there are well and good .i will check out your blog later this evening . till then great work .! ;)

"What if" stuff is fun and fascinating, so forget Purists.
Wow, the things that stand are out are: EVERYTHING..and the diamond boiler plate runnig board (KEWL!!! and well executed) and the axe and shivel! Very nice, But what else would we expect from an Egg Zepplin...???
(I am sorry I couldn't cast the insulators)
-
siara ' nice work on the fenders and tools mate . ita coming along fine . i myself have taken a break from the boat and broke out my acadamy 1/25 scale panther d model that i have converted to a panther g . other than the main lower hull that holds the torsion bars and the drive sprockets the rest is scratch built . i will post some shots a.s.p .till then take care and talk to you soon . :D

A VERY GOOD FISHERMAN!!!! ;D
-
Thanks guys!
Yes the first 2 fish and the last are carp, and the single green creature is called tench.
Another weekend passed with me spending the time away from the Kettenwagen factory.
This time the Flying Legends Show in Duxford kept me away.
Feel free to look up the pictures:

Hope you like the pictures, as my camera wasnt exactly up to standard required.
I promisse to get the decent camera for the next event. ;)

WOW! WOW! WIW! I saved few pix, some beauties in there!
I've been inside a B-17 and B-24, and up close to a P-51, but that was an embarrassment of riches as theysay! And flying! Wow!
Thanks for sharing that - I know you must have had a great time.
-
very nice pictures!
Cheers/Jan
-
Hi Siara,
Great photos! Three B-25s in a row - fantastic. Also two Fw190s. Are they the Flugwerk new builds? Good to see the Gladiator and Lysander flying together.
How is the Beaufighter restoration coming along? Is it on public view or somewhere away from prying eyes?
Good work on the BMW too.
Cheers,
Dougie
-
Last time i have seen the Beau she was just the sad looking frame, but now all the fuselage is done, and shes awaiting engine fitout. Looks like the job is nearly done.
The workshop is open to the public, and everyone can see whats being restored at the moment.
Theres the P 47 Thunerbolt razorback in the works too, amongst other stuff.
-
ladds' where are the pictures of the airplanes ? anyway siara tracks are on the spot mate . are they fruimodel white metal tracks that you pin together .i have yet to print some shots of the panther as a matter of fact i have barely time to sleep due to the fact one of my mates at work will be out for a spell and i am taking over the hours . so now i am up to 85 hours a week .! i will try like hell to get shots on the tank a.s.a.p 'i will have to say it looks good rokket so hang tight . ;)
-
anyway siara tracks are on the spot mate . are they fruimodel white metal tracks that you pin together
Thanks Michael.
Yes- this is the PzKpfw.I / Opel Maultier (ATL-20) white metal tracks by Friul. Excellent stuff if you ask me. I enjoyed every minute of putting them together. Than again- thats me. I like that kinda stuff, even though it means spending few evenings with mini forceps in one hand and magnifying glass in the other. ;)
I have sorted the heads out. The heads used are from Hornet, and so is the urinating soldier.
Im thinking of adding some russian accent, which will be urinated upon, but im struggling with the ideas at the moment.

What's that PE in the handrail center? (LOVE that running board with diamond late)
-
Wink- the PE on the rail is from Aber, and it is a gun rack. Soldiers sometimes locked the guns there in transit- if equiped with long Kar.
I like the running boards with antislip surface too. Im impressed with the stuff really.

-
tell us more about that windscreeen
Like what? :D
I used the Aber PE, but the original kit glass wasnt big enough to be sandwiched inbetween the PE parts, so i cut the bit of Fanta bottle, straightened it using my wifes hairdrier (inustrial strength ;D ).
Theres still few bits missing like wipers, wiper motors, bolts, and wingnuts. All the small detail will be glued in just before the painting process.
The reason i left all the small bits for laters is, that im still making lot of adaptions to get the model looking the way i see it in my head.
At the mo im killing my ayesight building the hood frame. I got most figured out. Few more frames, and i can stretch some canvas.
-
You had BETTER include the bugs smashed into the windscreen, or it won't be 100%!!!
Woe, a soda bottle, I had no idea you could do that! Next time, this may or may nit be good, but consider a comb-binding cover - clear, thin, pretty good stuff. A photocopy/digital printer sells them.
This is really a very cool project (like all of your projects).
-
Thanks a lot for good words Wink!
I didnt know you were gonna like this project, as this is purely submarine forum, but if you still didnt kick my thread out i will update you all on this build.
I completed the roofs frame. It required lot of scratch building, as Aber didnt include all of the parts in the set. Eventually i go there, and surprise, surprise the roof works! ;)
-
It's a very cool project, and you always do a brilliant job, anice combo of great skill and imagination!
And we're expanding to more, we love uboats and subs, but there's a lot out there, there's no reason we can't include everything one day.
-
Heres few pics of the progress made.
I made the new axe head from resin, and reworked the handle.
Clamps are from Aber, and some scratch building.
The clamps work to allow me to paint the tools seperately. ;)
-
wow, nice work on the head and clamps. Was the axe bad and you made a new head?
-
Yes- the axe from Dragon had wrong shape aparently. The german axe had straight edges on both sides withouth the in cut on the bottom.
The other axe from Dragon i had was right, but the casting quality wasnt as good as scratch built one. ;D

You must have micro sized fingers! 1:9 sounds big, but some parts are pretty tiny
-
Actually it is in 1/35. Theres small catch in the title of this topic. I started to build the BMW R75 in 1/9 scale , and lost the creative touch, so turned my attention to SF project in 1/35- Kettenwagen. The build and the updates continued, and i think its best to seperate the 2 topics now. Can you please create the new topic ("Project SF Kettenwagen + Flak 38 Tamiya 1/35") and move the topic there? I will continue the BMW build at some point.
Sorry for the confusion, and the trouble.
Please delete this post when done. ;)
Best.
Siara
-
Ha! No worries, it's my small brain jumping in knee-jerk fashion. Well, 1:35 is respectable, but that headlight is still small and one mor thing..awesome! Do you have a lathe?
-
Do you have a lathe?
Wish i had the lathe. I turn the parts in the Dremel handtool. With caution it is possible to turn some small parts in it.
Small progress- Kettenwagen has his eyes now:

ahh, the Dremel. I love mine, have had it over 30 years! Recently bought a 2nd one, new and hi-tech!
I turned the glove, boot, and collar rings on a Dremel by hand for my 2001: A Space Odyssey model. It was hard work, but looked OK. Now that I have a micro lathe, I am tempted to redo it in aluminium, but I think it is too late and best to move on: http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsweb/rokket/2001/index.shtml (http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsweb/rokket/2001/index.shtml) and http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsweb/rokket/2001/figure.shtml (http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsweb/rokket/2001/figure.shtml)
You've done great work!

I love the Dremel tool too. One of my favourite tools in my workshop- apart from Dremel soldering torch that is. ;D
Goo job on that space fellow Wink!

Ive changed where the fuel inlet is. Moved it from the bonnet to the side of the vehicle.

Fixed the Notek light also. Base scratch built, and light from Tamiya. Couple of missing nuts on the bottom from steel wire.
