Title: Looking for info/reference pictures for U-201 and U-214
Post by: conus00 on 16 Nov , 2008, 13:42
Hello everyone,
this website was recommended to me by Siara from subsim.com.
I was wondering if someone could help me out? I am about to start work on two of Revell's 1/144 U-boats: VIIC and VIID. I have in mind to build U-201 and U-214 but I lack reference pictures. Here are the pics I have so far.
U-201:

U-214:

I am in particular interested if the boats had wire-net cutters while using these camouflages (Revell refers to it as early/late version and the instructions are not wery clear on the subject):

U-214

Also I just saw in the preview of U-boot im Focus the following picture of U-214. That camo looks very interesting. Does anyone, by chance, have a side view of this particular one?

THANKS!

Hi Conus,

Welcome to our forum at AMP. We'll try to assist you with your builds. Both U 201 and U 214 make good choices due to camo schemes.

The order to remove netcutters was issued on 1 March 1941. Most were removed soon after this date. U 214 is easy to answer on this question. It definitely didn't have the netcutters as it was launched well after they were all removed.

U 201 did have netcutters at the beginning. But they were probably removed by 22 April 1941 when leaving on the first patrol. I'm not sure when the camo scheme was adopted on U 201 but it was there during the first patrol. I too would like to know if the boat ever had a combination of camo scheme and netcutters. We would need a photo to prove this though, and there are none that I have seen so far. Anybody got one? Until then you might be safer going with no netcutter.

If you send me a PM I'll email you some shots of U 201.

Cheers,

Dougie

Thanks for the info Dougie.
I have already sent you a PM.

Also I have noticed that you are one of the moderators of the forum. Would you mind to move this post where it belongs?
Thanks

Hi there and thanks!
Dougie nas already sent me a whole bunch of U-201 pictures as well so I've got U-201 covered.  ;)

The problem is U-214. It seems that there is not too many pictures available. I am still looking for someone who actually owns a copy of U-boot im Focus No.4 and wouldn't mind to share the pictures of the camo with me.

Hi Conus,

I'll send you the U 214 image privately. We're probably best not posting too many of the U-Boot im Focus images on the forum. It is a great magazine that prints rare and unpublished photos. But as these photos are very much the purpose of the magazine it would be best to limit the number of images posted to the net.

Cheers,

Dougie
