Hi Pierre,

U 96 had the netcutters when she sailed into St Nazaire on 22 May 1941 (end of patrol 4). So if you are modelling U 96 before 22 May you can be sure the netcutter was still there.

The netcutter was probably (but not definitely) removed during the period in dock between patrol 4 and 5 (22 May to 16 June). I do not have access to the boat's KTBs so I can't say exactly when she went into dock for the refit. The snorting bull was probably applied during this refit.

To make it easy for yourself, you could model the boat on 22 May - then you can be certain of the features on the boat. This date would allow you to add victory pennants as well.

On question 3, Dunkelgrau 51 (D51) seems the most likely. Remember that despite the name, D51 was actually just a medium grey. Look at photos of the hull sides of the Bismarck as they were in D51.

My main point regarding U 96 upper colour is that it was very unlikely to be the light grey Hellgrau 50. Schlickgrau 58 would probably be too dark, which leaves D51 as the most likely option.

If I can help just ask.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi Dougie,

thanks for your very detailed answer.
Means for me I have two options.

1. option: Build U-96 at the time 22.May with two laughing swordfishs on CT, no breakwaters, with windeflector and netcutter.

2.option: from June or July with two laughing swordfishs and a snorting bull, without breakwaters, without netcutter but with winddeflector.
