Title: Type VIIC/41 U-boat (U-995) 1:72
Post by: Smajser on 27 Mar , 2010, 15:15
Hello everybody!

I start to build my first U-boat and I need help ''experienced wolves'' from this forum.
This is the first in a ''series'' of questions which I will probably post in the future  ;D

Can you tell me that would be Vallejo Air Color to match the colors of which was painted U-995?

Thanks in advance

Zeljko

Welcome Zeljko!

There's a paint chart at my old U 557 site, it has some cross reference between Humbrol and Tamiya and Vaelljo: http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsweb/rokket/u557/paint.shtml (http://www.rokket.biz/models/modelsweb/rokket/u557/paint.shtml) - there's also Douie's Ubout Colours article, which is also here in the library at the AMP site: http://amp.rokket.biz/docs/u-boat_colours_with_photos_5.pdf (http://amp.rokket.biz/docs/u-boat_colours_with_photos_5.pdf)

The cross refernce is for Humbrol paint colours, but does not actually list the U 995 colours, Dougie's article will be the answer there.

Good luck and post some pix of your build when you can.

Thanks for the welcome & references!

I'm still in a somewhat ''painful'' :) process of drilling drainage holes. Once we had a result worthy of this forum I will post pictures.

As regards the ''problem'' about the choice of Vallejo colors for U-995, I think I'll have to experiment until you find the right shade of gray.
Unfortunately I have not found anyone who has used these type of  colors for painting the submarine

Nice and sharp work, looks very good. But I have one question regarding the air periscope.... so far I know these strips was mountend to reduce the sea swell, I think they was more on the upper part of the periscope.

I agree that the strips should be more towards the top of the periscope. Now we see that the thickness of the wire should be thinner. I'll have to re-do the whole attack periscope. Thanks for the warning  :)

Hello Zeljko, periscope looks very good now. The paint, for sure the boat get 2 times grey primer and one time grey over it when the boat was launched  :D But do you now what time you want display the boat, could by important for the decal... I think the boat was based in Norway paint could be a dark blue but not quite sure in the moment  :-\

Check out the AMP library for uboat colours article (soon to be replaced by a huge collection of combo info...more on that in a day or so) and I have some model paint info from my old build, a bit of Humbrol/Vallejo/Others equivs that may be useful: http://amp-modelparts.biz/ (http://amp-modelparts.biz/)
