I thought about using a hinge but I thought that a hinge would rust over time, so they may perhaps uses a 'spring steel' strap. This I believe would grasp the grapnel better; there would be no moving parts and fewer moving parts to rust.

Early on in the war when the decks were metal I would believe the holder were welded on to the deck and by the end of the war when the decks were made of wood I imagine they were bolted right in to the wood.

I could not see from the picture what they used for a pin. I think either a

Simon/ Siara ...Any kind of release mechanism on the grapnel would have been of the "quick release " type. Hardware such as bolts, nuts and wing nuts (unless they had a tether attached) were considered a poor application. The mechanics used was probably much like the sketch by siara.. loose parts got lost, or dropped through the decking or overboard. Another example is the tether on the pampion of the "88" and tethered plugs on the other armaments. Practices like this are also found on aircraft.

Bill, your right about the loose parts getting lost, or dropped through the decking or overboard. Did not think of this :(

Hi, simon...As for tethers..I wouldn't doubt that if work was done, especially at sea, the tools were more than likely tethered to thier belts...Of course we've all seen the men themselves tethered to the u-boat..Back to the grapple..Siaras sketch certainly looks like the bracket in the photo..

Bill, I think your right again. I now think that the bracket with a hinge look more correct than my drawing. And if I relook that the picture the angle of the open strap looks to great to be a 'spring steel' strap without a hinge. I will redo my drawing later.

Siara..What are you using to replicate the hardware on the bolt pattern on the base of your "20 mm" mount...Very exact !, Very interesting !
