Hi Gents,
the german movie company "Bavaria"discusses a remake of "Das Boot".
According to the german website "Filmstarts" the "Bavaria" is owner of the movie rights. There are debates for a remake but they are not sure if they will producing a tv mini series or a movie for the big screen.

WOW! WHY? I can't imagine any single part of the film to be one tiny bit better with a remake. What new things (deep, worthy) can be brought to the project?
They should leave it alone!
-
Hi Rokket,
can't imagine it too. For example: my favourite movie is the "Third Man" (GB 1949), thinking about a remake of this outstanding film seem needless to me. Same thing with remaking "Das Boot". I fear that that there will be lots of CGI effects in the new movie.

P.S.: Sorry for posting this topic in the wrong section and thanks for your help to fix that error.

I hope and pray they Don't remake Das Boot! I agree with Falo that the movie will rely heavily on GCI special effects, with the actual story being second. I wish the film makers would come up with some new material and leave our original classics alone! You guys might not know it but the original screenplay was offered to Hollywood first but ey wanted to change it and thats why it was produced in Germany in the first place. Hollywood wanted to add scenes of survivors in lifeboats being shot at by the Uboat crew for example. If this does go forward we should start a petition!
Regards,
Brian

I would be against a remake, but I think a remastered version would be OK. I also would not mind seeing a couple of CGI scenes. For example, replacing the T-6 Texan "antisubmarine plane" with a Catalina, or better yet a Sunderland. Or maybe those few distance shots of U-96 that you can tell are a model.
But other than that I think it should be left alone..
-
I am in the mind to say "go for it".
If they can make Das Boot better, that will be great for us!
If the remake is awful… we still have the old version to watch :)
-
Don't see how any cast could do even half as well as the originals. Something along the lines of Star Trek Remastered would be nice though, with state of the art special effects and still have the original cast..
-
Hey. Don`t want to see a remake either. But what would be cool, was a tv-series of the Buchheims "Die Festung". Ist kind of a Sequel to "Das Boot". The story starts with U 96 returning from a journey and deals with Leutnant Werner/ Buchheim travelling through France and Germany in the days around d-day. Kind of like Band of Brothers meets Das Boot. The side-plot deals with the defending of the "fortress" Brest. One of the main characters in these terms is "der Alte", the commander of U 96 being promoted to Flotillenchef.
-
...and there is also a long chapter of a boat with a snorkel trying to break trough the blocked harbour of Breast... ;)
-
@ Jan:
I suppose the Bavaria-Company has not the movie rights for Buchheims book "Die Festung". According to the newspaper articles it is an important cost factor to already own the rights for "Das Boot".
@ Snowman:
Viewed in this light it's a very pragmatic point of view.

I like Capt Tucker's thinking. Beef up those little spots with new tech, not hurt the film at all. Empire Strikes Back - the really only good improvement in the FX redo was Cloud City finally had windows and looked like a real city instead of small sets. It didn't detract but did what was originally intended. Fixing up the Catalina would be nice.
But don't remake it! Jan has a great idea

Hi Gents,
latest news for this thread, according to a german newspaper it won't be a remake of "Das Boot" but a TV-Mini series (8 episodes, each episode one hour long). Produced for the TV Channel Sky and Bavaria it will be broadcast in 2018, the mini series has a 25 million Euro budget. The series will be shown also in Austria, England, Italy and Ireland.
The story of the series starts with the end of the movie "The Boat" when the U boat was destroyed by air raid and sunk. So - as I said - its no remake but a resumption. Little is known about the story, according to Bavaria (one of the producers) the plot will be about "young men driven by blind fanatism to war" (citation Bavaria). The french Resistance and the Allies are also involved. So I suppose it's not the movie adaption of Buchheims "Die Festung" .

Hi folks,
Thanks for posting, Simon. Please tell me that the model in that video is not going to be used in the $28 million Das Boot 2? It looks like the model that was originally made for the film U-571 (sorry for mentioning that film). As far as I recall the model was then modified to be used in other TV productions such as Ghostboat with Del Boy Trotter (David Jason). It looks like they have not modified the hull sides back to make it look like a real U-boat. The main drainage area is a joke, it looks like something from a crude semi-scale bath toy. And the flooding holes are almost as bad.
This is a joke, right? They are not going with this in the new miniseries are they?
Cheers,
Dougie
-
Dougie, they did some work on the model about two months ago and because they started filming now, I imagine what you see now is the finish U-boat model for the movie.
I also have noted a few other people worries about the hull and flood holes etc. I am little surprised that they did not talk to the exports before starting filming.
-
UN-bee-leeevable. SIGH. The horror movie (horror!) BELOW, used a real boat (Gato), good CGI, and great interior sets. It IS very possible to do! grrrrrr

Seems like the production team doesn´t have a real professional advicer with the scenery or something... Most of the potential audience probably won´t see anything wrong with the boat. Or at least producers might think so... I´ll bet the flooding holes aren´t the only mistakes we will see! :P
Am i wrong but is the u-boat they´re using in the film slightly smaller than the real VIIC? Down scaled?

Two new images released of TV-Mini Series Das Boot

The TV series remake of Das Boot is here in Australia. I have seen 2 episodes. Here are my thoughts...
It's good! OK, it's NOT "our" Das Boot, but it has great production values and acting, and I'm really enjoying it! A lot! It's about uboots, and Germany, and WWII, but it is a lot different to the movie and the books. I see it like Star Trek Discovery: really cool in so many ways, just not "real" Star Trek, but that's OK.
The boat. Sigh. ??? OK, I agree that it looks really scaled down, kinda tiny. I know, the drain/flood stuff, but it still looks pretty real if inaccurate, especially to people not on a uboot forum ;D . The hull with weld seems, good bow, inside is nice. They even did an homage to the film with a dive, guy on the toilet trying to get his pants up and get to his post, identical shot almost to the film.
Anyway, its the only submarine (let alone uboot) show I've seen in a long time. I'm invested in Kaleun, I even sorta don't mind his First Watch Officer though he is angry and could be trouble, Simone Strasser from Alsace but German, she's mixed up in some stuff, and her brother is forced back out on patrol away from shore duties...it's all happening!
Just my 2 cents. (With inflation that must be $200, or to look at what two cents is really worth, hundreths of a cent!) ;D
-
Watching more, still enjoying...BUT...wrong champagne glass for 1942...OK, no reeeel big deal..but then without spoiling, a bizarre blow all ballast/surface thing....dramatic, but could have been more so, AND accurate!
-
Finished. Overall, worth watching, but definitely a mixed bag. The uboot stuff is very Hollywood with all the things that happen, and I almost was more interested in the land/Resistance story. And the boat looks so weird on the outside because...yes, it truly is from that movie. You know tghe one. I would check out the miniseries though, it's worth watching for different reasons. But...SIGH.
-
Hi Rokket,
thanks for your informations. Saw a commercial here in Germany on free television for the Sky mini series, don't know if the series will be available for "non Sky channel watchers" maybe on DVD.
Already Lothar Günther Buchheim the author of the "The Boat" was dissatisfied with the movie version of his book. He called the movie later disrespectfully "Unterwasser-Western" which means "Underwater western movie".
Did they add the nervous breakdown scene of Johann in the remake?
Regards
falo
-
Hi falo,
No nervous breakdown. Western is very well put, because they go on a special mission and all kinds of things happen! Very Hollywood! But everyone should watch it. Except Dougie. (He would need a straight jacket for parts...) ;D
And it's far better than U-571! (but that doesn't say much really...)
-
Looking forward to seeing this sometime. Hope that it makes it to netflix someday.
Later Tim

I´ve heard that one might find this on certain p2p network... My isp is blocking some connections so it's out of my hands...
