Title: Question: for new project
Post by: wildspear on 03 Apr , 2010, 12:12
Hey all,

I saw a pic of a u-boat, no idea what kind it was but I liked the look of it. On the sail it looked like it had some kind of gun turret. Can any one point me in the direction I need to travel to find out what kind of Sub this was? I think this would be a great project to try.

Hi Wildspear, the uboot was the U-A.  It was a one-off type, orginally built for the Turkish Navy as the "Batiray", it was taken over by the Uwaffe at the outbreak of the war.  Uboot.net is a good place to start your search for more info.

HTH,
Ernest

Very interesting boat.

Looking at the second last picture, does anybody have any idea how they removed the tompion from the 4" gun when preparing to fire?  It looks like the end of the barrel would be beyond the reach of somebody in the 'turret' and it would be awkward to say the least to climb out along the barrel while under fire.

http://www.turkishnavy.net/submarine/hist2.htm

"TCG BATIRAY was launched on 28 September 1938. As the Second World War started, her trails were not completed. The German Navy took her over and named U-A. She sunk during the war 7 ships for a total of 40,706 tons. From August 1942 on she was used as a training submarine. On 3 May 1945 she scuttled herself in Kiel."

I notice also in the same picture, the front of the CT has a cupola very similar to that of the late war Schnellboots.  I wonder if this is where they got the inspriation from?

How is your project going wildspear?  Any pictures of your build yet?
