Great stuff! Thanks for posting this.

I kept wondering why I couldn't quite get the frames to line up at the stern. Now, it makes sense. I knew the extreme bow was too long, but now the stern, too. I guess its time to get out the razor saw!

I had taken a actual blueprint scanned it and ran it through photo shop to scale it to the size of the model.
cut it into printable sizes an taped them together than made a ruler off the print so I can transfer it to the model.
I tried using aptivaboy's scale but it came up short.

I think the main midships section (straight, horizontal keel) of the model is pretty close. The frame rulers matched up there almost perfectly. It was where the keel angled upwards at bow and stern where I began experiencing issues. The stern just didn't want to match up, and I had already learned that the bow locations were off. The indent for the bow planes may be off a smidge, and the locator or pivot hole may need to go up or down a few mils on the hull (I forget which). Did you find the same thing?

Just laying the drawing over the model the dive planes as well as the anchor well are more forward on the blueprints than the model.

I'm thinking the anchor well will need to be corrected as it looks different on the prints and I have this one picture of the Cobia showing the anchor well.



I guess the anchor should have it's own thread. :P

Ya, the anchor well is abit too square and clean and deep on the kit. It's been on the "mabe" resin list as a replacement 9along with stern planes). If you ahve any good shots and thoughts...

I'll dig around my files to see what I have.

There was an extensive discussion on the stern planes over on the now private section of the Subcommittee.
IIRC at the minimum you have to flip the planes, but in reality they need some reshaping of angles.

By the way, have you looked at the pictures of the Pampanito in dry dock.
There are a few pictures of the stern planes.

Also the Drum and Bowfin when she was dry docked since they show the dive planes.

The Drum is getting her rear end fixed up and the Bowfin had her rear sealed up.

yeah, between the Floating Drydck plans and that Pamp pic, shouldn't be too bad to make new planes. Does anyone have an interest?

Something else I've noticed and updated in the FP notes: the bow limbers are off. 1-2 good, 3 OK, and then downhill, with 8 ending right thru a frame. Iyt;s not much, and for most purposes, people can ignore. BUT, is anyone interested in replacing their bow limbers with PE? Here's what I was thinking...

a strip of new bow limbers...on the INSIDE, half etch patterns for the small round holes. Modelers could drill out the appropriate ones. (This may change to totally separate PE peices with the 3 or 4 round hole patterns). Also, foldable PE for the "deck" above the torps/limbers, with supports (based on a combo of some styles). Would give thos big limbers some nice detail. But if there isn't much interest, not point in  making  project.

Hi Rokket. I'm up in Hartford, Ct, working from my granddaughter's lap-top. So, I can't do much right now. But I should be home by next Wednesday, or so.
I have a full set of topside frames for a Balao, if I haven't sent them to you yet, do you want a set? Also, given a little time, I could put togehter a full set of hull frames and bulkheads plans. Any interest there?
I don't know if I'll get beck online before I get home, so there may be a delay before I see your answer. Be patient.

The PE for the bow would be nice but I will probably be to far along before they where ready.

I would be interested in the dive planes since they will be added later in the construction.

Looked through all my files and found very little in the way of pix of the EB anchor well.
I'll have to look through Navsource again for launch pictures.

Some of the Manitowic boats seem to be the same.
These pix are EB boats only.


If anyone has pix from the water side of the Cobia and Cod it would help greatly.

ANCHOR WELL - the main bad points to the kit seem to be a square well instead of bent and welded metal, and the cutout doesn't allow for the stock. Easy fixed! (With some more research to confirm)
