VIIc U-404 1:34
« on: 02 Mar , 2016, 08:41 »
Hi all, I build this sub since 10/2014. So I will post the complete buildreport bit by bit. The kit is a early one from "Engel Modellbau" I started with the Conningtower and changed some Details to build U-404. If there are any questions, feel free to ask!

Hi and welcome aboard!  :)
Nice to see different scale boats and a build too! This was totally new model for me. Can you tell more about it? Or do you have a link to manufactures site or something? Anyway... looking great!  ;)

Hi,

thank you! You can see the manufacturers Homepage here: http://www.engel-modellbau.eu/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=3_133&products_id=1199

To descripe the Submarines complete techniks is very much. If you have any special Question please let me know. Maybe the next pics answer a few of you questions.

So the next part was the Floodholes. Some of them are so very small that you can not open it with a File or Dremel. I made the desicion to draw all Floodholes also the complete Deck in CAD and mill it with my small CNC Machine.  In pic 56 you can see the holes made by hand, in pic 55 my first try to see if the part fit into the Hull.

And here we go.... The milling cutter diameter is 1mm, so the holes was nearly scale. The Hatches are engraved with a 60° Engravemill. The thickness of the deck is also 1mm GPR (glass fiber) My Mill can only hold parts with a maximum of 500mm, so I seperate the Deck in a few Parts.

With much of Tape I brushed the "Wikingerbug" Insignia. The Hull is preshaded with a very dark gray.

The Hull and Conningtower are painted with mixed RAL Colors (7016/7021/7009) I used much Information from "U-Boat Colours and Markings" by Dougie Martindale. I think he made a very good Job to find the right Colors and do a fine research. Also a lot of original pics and a few from U-404 I found.

Awesome build Sascha, great work with the white outline of the turret emblem! the weatering is great too. Must be a fairly big model!! have you thought to add the watertight housing for the underwater camera that was installed at some point on the port side of the turret? that detail would render unique an already excellent model. Congrats for the top notch work and, again, welcome aboard!

Hello Sasha,

I agree with previous comments, lovely build and painting first class. Thanks for the kind comments about the article.

One issue that is difficult is the painting of the D/F loop on the starboard side. It is often not visible so colours are hard to determine. The circular part was black. The part at the top and bottom were in the upper grey. Also the stem beneath was unpainted bronze (or possibly stainless steel).

Another tiny detail is the insulating conduit at the front of the tower, just above the spray deflector. This was a very light grey on most boats. Indeed it was a very light grey on U 404.

You could go for waterline draught markings for the hull. I know your boat is 34th scale but that is very close to the 35th scale decals. Any idea why Engel went for 34th scale?

Well done!

Cheers,

Dougie

Thank you all for your comments!

@Dougie: Yes I will upgrade the D/F Loop, the insulating conduit is changed already. I have the Whaterline markings from Engel, but I can´t see some of this markings on pictures of U-404. So I dont know if I should use them.

I think Engel choosed 1:34 because of the technics. The maximum Pistontank Volume from Engel is 750ml, so the do not have to manufacture extra big Tanks and a bigger pressure Hull. Maybe that is the reason, I dont know.

@Helmut: I use a sheet of white decal paper. You have to stick two blades from a cutterknive (dont know the right term, maybe box cutter blade)  together. So you can cut with two blades a very fine line. It only works if they are extrem sharp that the edge of the line is clean. I hope you understand, if not I will make you a few pics with every step.

Hi,

as I wrote, I dont like the propellers. So I decite to made my own scale Propellers. First I scaned a part of the Niestle/Köhl Propeller Drawing. In my CAD I modified the scale to 1:34. Next step is to outline the blade and create a CNC file with that data.
