Have you guys seen the six (6) hour version as originally shown on German TV?  It was originally done as a miniseries and it is out on DVD, but no Blu-Ray as far as I know.  The full lengh version is great.  Obviously, a lot was cut when it was distilled down for theatrical release.  One of my favorite war movies by far.

Welcome aboard, Bob!

Yes, watch the full version many many years ago (+20 years). I would love to watch it again. I suppose the only reason I have not got this version of the movie is the thought of reading subtitle for six hours does nothing for me :(

Just watch the director

Hello, Snowman, and thanks for the welcome.
I know what you mean about reading sub-titles for six hours.  I've watched the theatrical release both sub-titled and in English and I think the English dubbing looses some nuances in the dialogue.
It sounds like you and I have very similar tastes in movies.  Saving Private Ryan was a fantastic movie.  Band of Brothers, what can I say?  I remember one episode, right after Easy Company had helped retake Foy, and they were sitting in the church, listening to the choir.  As the scene starts, everybody is there, then slowly, one by one, the killed and wounded fade out.  I have to admit, it left me a blubbering mass.
As to We Were Soldiers, I agree that the Moore/Galloway book was much better than the movie.  The movie was filled with inaccuracies - particularly the charge at the end of the battle.  There is a new book by Moore and Galloway out in the U.S. called We Are Soldiers Still.  I haven't read it yet but its on the list.
I hated Pearl Harbor.  How can you take a story with all the drama and action one could possibly ask for and muck it up with a totally irrelevant, improbable love story that detracts from the story?  I have the same complaint with Titanic.
A great recent Iraq war movie is The Hurt Locker.  I'd highly recommend it.
I keep hoping that Hollywood will put all that great CGI to work and do a good remake of Midway.

I'm looking forward to learning from you guys and maybe making a useful contribuition or two of my own.

When I was a young Sergeant First Class, LTG Moore and Mr. Galloway came to our post book store shortly after "We Were Soldiers Once and Young" was published.  It was a Saturday and only a few people showed up to speak with them and get their book signed.  I ended up getting to talk with LTC Moore and Mr. Galloway for about and hour and a half.  I have some fond memories of that conversation.

Bob - I agree!  and for "Pearl Harbor" - geez, all you have to do is interview a few veterans, and in the book, USN in WII there are many great interviews with survivors: THAT's the script! To make up a bunch of 1-dimensional crap was...frustrating and silly!

I saw Das Boot in 1981 in the dubbed version, and I was stunned at how good the sound was, German accented but English voices worked great, and the lips mostly matched. I don't mind sub titles, but they can make you tilt your head down and miss the movie!

Just to clarify: is this the 5 hrs version or just the Director's Cut?

I believe so, it only the Director's Cut on the Blu-ray. If you want the full version (+8 hours) of Das Boot I think you need the DVD version.

I must have got the discount version. The full TV series would be an interesting way to watch.

Some of my favourite movies are war movies.

Apocalypse Now Redux, is my all time favourite movie, not really true but a wonderful movie.
Saving Private Ryan, the first part of this movie the Normandy Landings must be one of the must powerful openings of any movie.
We were Soldiers. The movie is OK, but the book!

Subtitle movies can be distracting, you look down more than at the scene. I thought the English dubbing was excellent.

I half don't mind subtitles, and half do...there's the problem of translation, sometimes I see the open captions and the caption folk take shortcuts! Then there's looking down at the bottom of the screen and missing everything! I must say, I saw the English dub of Db when it came to the US in 1981(?) and it was brilliant! I do wish I knew more German than Der Heisse Chokolada and Das Beir and counting to 100.

I watched the Blu-ray version of Das Boot last summer and I will watch it again this summer. The question is it worth it.

The video quality and audio quality is fantastic, much better than the DVD version and very enjoy to watch in HD. The extra special features on the Blu-ray version is not worth it. It adds nothing really new and significance.
