Title: How much paint per U-boat?
Post by: bill_c on 27 Jul , 2009, 19:34
I ordered my White Ensign Kriegsmarine paints and they came today-- thimbles are more spacious!  ???

Is 2 tins going to be enough for one kit? I have Schiffsbodengrau and Hellgrau for a "two tone" boat.

I was greatly afeeared myself, so came up with my own formula using Humbrol. That was fun, learned a lot, but not economical - I used a few tins experimenting, and then to get the right color I needed several different colours. I painted with my paint, then did a topcoat with WEM. I suggest you do the same, prime with something CLOSE (a nice Humbrol?) just thin, and then use the WEM and as they say here, "she'll be right mate!" This way 2 tins should do it especially thinned ans airbrushed.

Thanks, Wink. I appreciate the coaching.

For making a pressure hull, how many sheets of flat styrene does it take?

a bazillion!

You should check out Glenn Cauley's info on it (member here), he made a full p-hull. I made end-caps and a fake top. I also buy my sheet in sheet - bulk at a plastic supplier, about a sq yard / meter. I usually go for 1/16, 1/8, and sometimes thicker, and then buy the thin stuff in small Evergreen packs at the hobby store. It's a great way to go. In the US I used Cadillac Plastics, they are everywhere, but so are others. Just white styrene. Haven't bought any in awhile, but you should be able to get each sheet for about $20 I think

I am following his step-by-step plan for a full hull (easier in the long run than trying to make end caps fit I suspect), but he doesn't specify how MANY of the sheets.

hmmmm..no idea. I still recommend buying in bulk, it's cheaper and feels so good when you know you have plenty sitting around! Ask Glenn, I'm sure he will tell you.
