Title: Making an IXC periscope from a coat hanger (experimental)
Post by: OldNoob on 03 Nov , 2015, 20:29
Ok so thought i might try making the periscopes for my IXC kit from metal.  So finding the correct size rod in a metal that will withstand the shaping process.
I found this chromed metal hanger that just happened to be almost the exact diameter as the spotting periscope

Next I cut a couple of lengths for making the periscope, this metal was extremely hard for some reason and i had to use the dremel to cut it.

Just putting the rod in the dremel and trying to shape it with a file didn't work well and got a bit hairy.  However putting the rod in and drill and having it turn as i used the dremel cut-off wheel to shape the rod worked much better.

After achieving the basic shape i ran the periscope end through various grades of sandpaper to get a somewhat smooth finish.

The final shape of the spotting scope is close but not an exact match to the kit scope.

Now..... The targeting scope is a whole other matter, and i am not sure i will be able to shape it with any accuracty or even resemblance to what it should be.
But i will update this post with pictures if i can do it.

Think this is a good place to stop because what i lack in finesse i make up for in total destructiveness.

Thank you for the compliments! :)
However, because of the encouraging comments, i was inspired to push it a bit further but i think i removed a little to much material or girth from the top. Ok now im done,, no really... ;)

Impossible to solder the cables or maybe i just lack the knowledge and proper tools, but every time i try to solder a cable on the heat spreads so quickly it de-solders what i have already done.

You've standardised your rate of perfection in periscope crafting Oldnoob, it's difficult to reproduce perfect copies of the same (perfect and damned small) thing freehand but you succeded very well. Am mighty impressed.
Am sorry for your wardrobe though ;D
