U-453 fetch thing
« on: 24 May , 2015, 15:10 »
Hello

Now that I have narrowed what boat to model, I have a question. Love the Baltic camo too

Is that bow fetch UID thing an aftermarket resin piece?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Bob

Hello Bob

i do not know if there is a aftermarket piece for a type VII GHG-Balkon.
But from my point of view the Balkon on this model is at the wrong place.
On pictures i know the Balkon is located in front of the keel.
A position like seen on this model is not logical because they want to improve the system. The problem was the near to the bow and to high locadet to water surface.
May be U 453 was one of the testing boats.

I guess I'll have to try the scratch build method using these drawings.

I dug up some plans for the u-570 in 1:50th scale out of Germany that I had from back in the day.
says SMB- Bauplan / Alfred Strittmatter

Like 6 pages of really detailed fittings, CT for a /41, plus CT for a regular type VII.
Never know what is buried in my collection of plans. Gotta take a look see and figure a way to
post them for everybody.

Hello Bob,

This plan is for type XXIII.
Type VII is similar.

This plan is part of the plan "Vom Original zum Modell - Uboottyp XXIII" from Eberhard Rössler/Fritz Köhl.

Thanks for the info. I have taken a break from the 1:200 scale Nagato for a change of pace.

Simon Morris did some research on the balkon geraet making a list which boat were fitted with same, I cannot see that U-453 was ever fitted with a balkongereat. U-995 did not have the Balkongeraet during WW2 , and in my time, however the geraet was fitted latter part of the 50ties and was eventually removed on the museums U 995. U 995s Balkongeraet fitted end 1950 and a copy of Simons execellent drawing is below. On the VIICs it was fitted as from frame 79 up to frame 92.

Thanks for the pics.
Oh well....It was a thought to put 1 on the 453. Back to the drawing board. I did order the Voss Type VIIc book from Amazon.
Oh Goody... more plans to collect.
Now that I am on disability, I have to swallow that news and come to terms with it. Having screws and rods in my spine did me in.
Having all this time on my hands is going to get used to.

Feel your pain with the back issues. My back recently went out on me as well. Luckily I have not had to have any rods put in, and have been able to manage with visits to the chiropractor. On the subject of the Balkongeraet, I would love to find an aftermarket one so that I could build the U-1105. I have thought about robbing the one off of a type XXIII, but have not been able to justify buying a type XXIII kit just for that reason.
I continue to hope a 1/72 aftermarket piece will eventually turn up..

Shouldn’t be too hard to make a 3D printer file for the Balcongerät. I could look at making a 3D model of the Balcongerät, but it would not be till the end of winter here, perhaps September or October.

Is that the same as Balcongerat that is on the U-505 kit?
On that boat, it was at the front of the keel, further back from the bow.
(I removed that piece for my U-505 project.)

No, the shape of the "Balkongerät" was different.
You could see type VII shape on the attached pictures above.
In addition it is possible that the prototype boats of each type had diferent shapes and/or positions also.
