Opel Olympia Bronco 1/35 (German Sentry diorama)
« on: 24 Jan , 2010, 15:55 »
Lets start something off here. ;)
New Bronco puting- Opel Olympia in 1/35.
It will be part of the little diorama, with the sentry box, and few figures.
More on the box, and figures later, lets start with the car.

This is the kit. I went with the full roof version, as the cabriolet is also available.

Heres where i am so far.

Mainly out of the box job, apart from exhaust pipe which was replaced by the brass tubing:

Interior primed, an ready to be painted:

Detailing of the body.
I haave reworked the registration plate brackets, and added Notek lights front, and back.
Stop lights, and rear indicators were removed:

TBC...

Good job on the body damage.  Its been a while since I have built any scale armor or vehicles.  I'm sure my skills have degraded in the area of simulating minor dings. Very well done on your part!

Thanks Ernest! ;)

Color modulation.
I wanted delicate effect, since i will modulate it bit more with oils.
I used lightened base color, with few drops of medium blue.

Thanks Rokket- unfortunately the paint wasnt good enough. We had lengthy discussion on polish PWM forum about color modulation, and we came to the conclusion, that the contrast isnt strong enough.
To make the color modulation work, and not disapear altogether after the filters, and oils, i washed the model, and started again.
This time i made the sharper contrasts.

Heres how it looks like after the decals, and sealed with varnish:

Fun part next- weathering.

The one with the horse is the divisional marking.
One with the 2 is for the anti aircraft battalion. ;)

I just taken in the delivery of the softbox tent, and few new lights in order to improve the pictures.
Hope it works. ;D

White filter for grey`s, followed by filter for tri tonal camo (just the hue)
Folowed by the neutral wash.
Started paint wear.

Simon- just google german panzer division markings- it should give you idea. The variety is so vast.

Hi Simon, the 24th Panzer Division was formed from the 1st Cavalry Division in late 1941.  The horse denotes the division's cavalry roots.  I few other divisions in the Heer has animals as division symbols, I have a couple of references on divisonal markings.  If you are interested I can look up the other divisions with animal divisional markings.

Siara, the car is looking awesome dude!  I really like the markings and the fender markers.  The filters are working quite nicely for you also.  Excellent application on your part my friend.

By the way, I'm finished with my Albatros DVa and have posted some pictures in the "Luftwaffe" section.  I'd be interested in hearing your comments.

Siara,

Your paint and finishing techniques are really superb.  Thanks for sharing, I am learning a great deal about painting from your posts!  Very inspirational and gives me confidence to try new things.  Paint and finishing (washes, dry brushing, weathering) have always been difficult for me.  I am worried something will go wrong that will spoil all of the work that went before the painting!

Cheers,

Bill

Rokket i have 2 fotografic lights with the softbox as a set. All nicely folds into the carry bag. Real good tool.

Bumper brackets made from scratch- the kit brackets were so thick.
Half of the front bumper was replaced by beer can, an mangled.
Painted using the hairspray technique with base color showing through.
Couple of rivets were made for each bumper from sewing pins turned flat in the dremel tool.

Rokket, Wildspear, Jan- thanks guys!

I prepared the wheels.
One wheel was drilled out, and insert was made using spare Kubelwagen wheel.
I wanted to display the wheel with bolts, and nuts.
On other 2 wheels i damaged the hubcaps.
Airvents were made from steel wire.

After lot of trial, and error i soldered the roof rack that looks semi decent:

Wooden slats will be made from styrene.
I will place the cannister, the luggage, and the mat for driving out of mud on it.

Due to plans to open the drivers door slightly i set to improve the overall look of the dashboard.
The clock faces were drilled out, and the insert was cast underneath, onto which the decals were applied.
I used the fibreoptic material to make the control lights.
First the end was blobed by the cigarette lighter, and then it was painted using the Tamiya Clear Red, and Green..

Even tho the dashboard will not be lit on this Opel model, it still makes for nice lights.
I was testing the technique for the Opel cabriolet model, which im planning on making with all the lights working. It should be easy to make, as now with the fibreoptics i only need one source of light.

Heres how it looks like with the background light on.

And that wheel looks so realistic, it reminded me of a VW a friend of mine had in univ.  Even down to the scrapes.

Pat, Wink- thanks for good word guys!
Its really appreciated. ;)

I started painting the roof rack using Tamiya, Vallejo, and hairspray technique.

Painted, before scratching:

...and after the scratching:

Now i will seal it with flat varnish, and finish the job with some pigments.

I also made the wheel rim to throw it on the rack, along with some luggage:

It is basicaly the VW kubelwagen wheel from Tamiya, with the tire cut off, and turned just like the real rim.

Hope you like the update. ;)

Thank you for your feedback gents!

I had little time to work on the model this past week, but still managed to change the decals for the propaganda company, added the rain marks, wash, and paint fadeing:

I have taken the shot using inbuilt flash, and IRL it looks much more subtle.
Weekend i should finish rust effects, dents, paint chipping, and dusting.

That's the thing about digital, overall quality and color amazing, but often the subtle soft stuff eluds a digital camera (or a scan of an analog shot). But believe us Siara, it looks awesome, an order of magnitude above the rest (as all your work).

I will post some more fotos later, but this time i will take out the light tent, and im sure the quality will improve.
The shot was taken using flash, which isnt the best thing in model fotography.
Once the rest of the weathering is completed i will post the mini gallery- probably later today, or tomorrow.

Thanks Wink.

Today i made the suitcase.
The case is from the kit, but i reworked it a little.
I have changed the shape of the body, added scratch built handle, few hinges, and locks. Locks are from the kit.
Painted Flat Brown first, then the stains, and shadows were mae using Oil & stain mixture from MIG, then Dark Wash was applied, and sealed with gloss varnish.
The edges were painted using the sponge technique with Hunbrol 62, and Vallejo 144.

Hope it looks like the weathered leather.

The clasps are from the Bronco kit.
Rest of the detail is scratch built.
Hinges, by glueing the thin wire to the foil, and rolling the foil around.
Couple of notches in the rim of the case, and the hinges slot in nicely:

Handle from thin wire, fixings from rolled thin strip of brass, and drilled for fixing pin (again thin wire). ;)

Siara ... I do not write much on this forum because my English level is not very good (thanks, Saint Google translator  ;) ).
I must say, I am very amazed by the great quality of your work. This car, the U-boat, the motorcycle, etc...
You are my teacher.
I can only say ...

THANKS, THANKS, THANKS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, SIARA!!!

Thanks guys!  ;D

Driver figure.
Figure is from Yosci- after 2 months of searching for it far, and wide i finally got it from the guy in Japan.
Head is from the Hornet range.
The cap is reworked- it was Totenkopf cap, so i had to sand the detail, and used stretched sprue, and Tamiya tape to make the correct crest.

Vallejo basic skin tone for face painting, Vallejo 102 / 105 / 058 for trousers, and cap, Tamiya XF-66 for the jumper.
Shadows on clothing using the basic colors darkened flat black.
Next step- highlights.

The head is finished.
I used the oils from MIG to tie the paintwork together, satin varnish was used on the forehead, bridge of the nose, cheeks, and chin, aswell as the bottom lip.
The insignia were placed on the cap also.

Im not sure, but i think i have seen the PE with the specs, as part of bigger set.
Actual german army glasses looked like so:

Some exceptions from the era:

What makes it even more interesting, the specs are made of plastic.

Tho people think of the 1960s as the plastic era, they did have plxiglas/perspex canopies, goggle lenses, and were doing big things, tho Bakelite (some kind of resin) was huuuuge.

Superb painting on the figure Siara.  Did you use oils or acrylics for the highlights and shadows?  I have never gotten the hang of using acrylics for adding shadows and highlights; so I stick with good old artists oils.  Again, superb work!

I can make the pair for you if you need them- no problem.

Good one Wink. I have found the way to make the specs with the dome, not just the flat, clear disc.
Once the Krystal Klear is just getting clear, before it hardens for good, using the wetted tothpick push from the inside out, and let it harden that way. It makes the specs look like the real thing, with the edge of the glass being thin, and the cenral bit protruding forward slightly. Not much really, but another step towards the realism i think.

Superb painting on the figure Siara.  Did you use oils or acrylics for the highlights and shadows?  I have never gotten the hang of using acrylics for adding shadows and highlights; so I stick with good old artists oils.  Again, superb work!

I must admit i have experimented on this figure.
First i painted the face in the basic skin colr from Vallejo- which is the acrylic.
Then- instead of using oils only- as you normally would- i used much thinned acrylic paints to paint the shadows, and highlights. The paint was almost transparent, and i had to make few passes with the brush, before the effect was visible. Painting with very thin mix allows for better control.
After the acrylics i sealed the face with flat varnish, and use few tonnes of oils to make the harsh contrasts disapear.
Dark wash made of cigarette lighter fluid, and black oil paint and gloss varnish for chin, nose, forehead, and top part of cheeks.
Thats it- nothing dificult at all.

I added another perspex plate- slightly smaller than the base of the box.
I will build my groundwork on that plate, and when finished, the plate will be glued to the base.
It allows for easy painting, without worrying about the base, an it also allows to build, and paint the sides of the scene.

...an general layout of the scene:

First step of vegetation making.

Last years grass.
When dry ill paint it light color, and eventually will provide me the platform for the more fresh, green grass.

Chaos Black primer followed by range of earthy shades.
Dry grass highlighted with mixture of yellows, browns, and buffs.
Dark wash (still wet here) all over the shop.

Tomorrow i will plant some green grass for the change, and ill dust that road a little.

Thanks Bill.
Theres the room for more improvements on this cycle, but it is not necessary, as not much will show on the dio, especially, that the bike is half way submerged in the grass.
Maybe on the next one- if the dio settings are right- i will make some of the things i have in mind.
So far this will do.

I used the little acrylic balls sold in the shoe boxes.

Thanks for good words Wildspear, and Bill.

Started the last element of the dio- the sentry figure.
First i discarded the handheld stop sign from behind the belt. Then the hands were cut off, and the sleeves drilled.
I will use the hands, and the head in M18 helmet from Hornet.
Handheld stop sign will be in the right hand- pointing the way.

Love the map, fold/creases excellent, looks really good scale, not oversize. Hands very nice on that figure!. Black - I learned about that technique, especially enjoy absorbing your methods!

Mr. Bill

Black primer is good when you paint the figure with lots of creases, and cranies.
While painting, leave these places underpainted, and you end up with natural looking shadows.
Have you ever paint the figure wih white primaer, and tried to lay the color in the hard to get place? This is it- it eliminates such situations.
I seal the face, and hands using the white, or grey primer- it is easier to paint the flesh color over such primer. Black is hard to cover with flesh color.

Siara,

Does the Chaos black primer only come in spary can? Also do you use an air brush for some of the figur painting or do you use brushes for all of it?

Chaos Black comes in the spray can, but you can easily decant it, as you do with other caned products.
Instead you can use Mr. Surfacer for such purpose, but i find Chaos Black so easy, and troublefree aplication allows for perfect coat every time.
I use airbrush for some figure painting- f.e. the clothing. I spray base coat, and then using the paintbrush to apply the shadows, and highlights.
I spray the base skin tone to head, and hands also.

Thanks Siara for the explanation of the black primer.  I have not really tried to do any figures before, but it makes sense using a black primer for the shadows.  Your techniques are impressive, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Wink- im glad you like it my friend.
I must say- im really happy with the way it turns out.
I have no previous experience in building the dioramas, but i try to follow in the footsteps of the masters in the field.
I also write in the MIG producttions forum, where we have few really outstanding diorama builders, and i just read, and learn.
I dont rush the job, and when in doubt im not afraid to ask questions, and usually they come up with right advice.

Im liking the diorama builing more, and more, so i think theres few more of them coming your way.

Hi Siara, I've been off the past 10 or so days road cycling and working on other projects, so I have not posted.  Your build is exquisite.  It would be a near sure blue ribbon winner in any contest.  Maybe someday my skills will get close to your's, but I'm not holding my breath!  Great work once again my friend!

EVERYTHING about this project is cool. It's almost impossible to pick a highlight, too, because even the "regular" stuff has a story +superdetailing. The bike spokes may be a top highlight, except for the eye glasses, except for the wood, except for the grass, etc., etc.

I can't praise this dio enough!

Oh, and pix - with a real bg, and some in B&W, are also amazing...
