Torpedo Shutters
« on: 25 Apr , 2007, 03:10 »
I'm working on more accurate replacements for the torp shutters and outer doors (fore and aft). I am only just finishing the design, and have ordered the resin for casting, still to make the patterns.

The shutters will be similar to the kit, but a less pronounced "stiffener" in the center with more accurate end, and of course, being separate, they can be displayed open once the kit is hacked open.

The outer doors ("hatches") are remarkably similar to the German boats, except that the shutter linkage exposed them, more like the Type IX than the VIIC. Those puppies will be a bit trickier.

It seems that the torpedo slots were probably a fraction more aft than the kit, but this could be incorrect, and probably more trouble than it's worth.

I haven't done final calcs, but looking at:

6 Fwd Shutters
6 Fwd Doors
4 Aft Shutters
4 Aft Doors

probably US$19.95

UPDATED INFO:

Torp Shutters: Boat vs. Kit
The kit Torp Shutters are obviously horribly wrong, at least in one small but important detail: they are OUTSIDE of the oval cut-outs, rather than inside (the real ones pivot-slid behind). The kit box art shows a torp being fired, but the shutter is closed and outside the oval! Clearly, something must be done!

Thanks to the extreme research efforts of Ted Swider (real life measurement, photo measurement, new dwgs) and heaps of archive photos from Mike Keating, I have some updated info on the Torp Shutter situation.

Here are some photos of the Pampanito in dry dock recently.  They show her fore and aft torpedo shutters in various positions.  FYI

Glad I could help.  If you plan on making any aftermarket parts available please let me know.  I have two Revell Gatos hiding under my bed waiting to be built but first I want to see what becomes available from the AM world.

Thanks,

Hi Boomer,

2 kits in hiding! Wow! (Wish I had 2 kits and 2 extra years!)

THINK I mentioned it here, but Eduard has just released 3 AWESOME PE kits for the kit, tho the metal deck and a few bits are POST-war/museum - I hope to make a better deck, but these kits ar Schweeeeet.

When you do make a better deck (which I'm sure you will) please make sure the emergency buoys are the WWII versions (round) and not the Post-WWII elepticals that both Revell and Eduard did.  If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Thanks,

Rick

Hey, Boomer!! IBS has the correct messenger bouys. But you'll have to modify the deck, yourself. Check 'em out.  http://ibs.eastcoastarmory.com/

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the heads-up but I could not find any messenger buoys on IBS's web site.  ???  What scale are you referring to: 1/78, 1/144, or 1/178?  Maybe you could go to the page they are on and capture the  URL for me, would appreciate it.  I'm still trying to finish up my Lionfish boat.  Got the fairwater and hull done, now need to work on the deck and a 5"/25.

How and what are you doin?

TIA   ;D

Mike (and everyone), Iron Bottom Sound has a LOT of fairwaters and some guns, and a Guppy sail. Looks like I've been beaten on towers - well, one less project
