« on: 29 Dec , 2009, 10:08 »
Finally here i am, i'm an italian modeller and hope to be able to share my passion with all of you.

I've been luky to found this forum years ago when i was at work on my u-boot. Rokket gave me lots of tips and now that  i'm at work on my gato i've decided to share my work with you.
I've decided to build USS Barb SS-220... before 1945 refitt witout 40mm and so on...
there is a italian forum where use to post my pics ...but hope to be able to do the same here (in english....arggggh)
the link is: http://www.betasom.it/forum/index.php?showtopic=31843 here u can find different uboats and some nice work.

here are some pics of my work in progress.

Thanks!
Yes it is. Fast work without any modification...and loong time for airbrush!
Now i'm going to keep all my attention to realize a realistik Barb...but as you can see
too many problems...
too many questions:
-first question: is there any good producers of 20mm orelikon twin/single - metal and resin?

ghgh i've seen some in nautilus resin made and j.r. haydes metal....

ok thats all i'm leaving to sydney to get some rest before return in italy.

ceers to all captains

oh, but that last shot is sooo nice!

As for the light, I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure it's the same for wveryone - show as little as possible. I bet that bottom, top, and front were closed, light only from the rear/side.

I've 4 photos of SS-220 Barb.... all of them says to me rear light is closed (but i am sure 100% only for barb)
my question is...
-upper and bottom light ??? sure tey has to present some holes to leave water and airbubbles free flow....
-form where they have maintenance to light? upper bottom lateral??

This is excellent work!  I'm very much enjoying it and looking forward to more.

You show Barb with two circular lockers on the port and starboard forward face of the fairwater structure, below the 40 mm gun.  I've been unable to find any pictures of Barb that show this arrangement.  Many later war photos show the starboard one but not the port.  I have a photo dated as late as 7-May-45 that clearly shows only the starboard one.  I noticed you have a photo in this post which shows the twin locker arrangement.  Is this a photo of Barb and, if so, do you know the date?

Regardless, keep up the good work!  Thanks for sharing your work with us.

Regards,
Bob

You are rigth Bob!

There is only one locker! ... It's a problem of lazyness... i'll cut it soon  ::)
I'm waiting to get hands on frontal Modified cygarette deck PE ...The Eduard PE doesn't fitt
SS220 before 1945.... and revell has not the right one too...
There are several errors too yet...
-buoy...  front and rear are different in real BARB (i'll do no change on revell model)
even because Eduard PE Gato class floor plates  has the same errors...
-near deck cannon... there were 2 small tender sotred under deck and revell and Eduard  lateral profile (atm) are wrong...
-Gato Revell deck is too simply!!! no hatchess... ? (i'll cut all ...just giving a look at the photos)
-EDUARD PE Gato class fuselage hinges plate missed some squared holes... too
-i'm quite sure that Barb before 1945 refit had not propeller guard too (i like with)

SIGH there is soo much work to do on it :)

The Eduard deck is ecellent, but POST-war, with the totally wrong buoys unfortunately. But it should be possible for a man with your skills to make the circular bouy and blend the deck  plates!

I really love this build!

Are those draft marks homemade or PE from the Eduard set? They look great on Barb's stern. I've got to remember to do something like that when I get back to my stalled Hardhead build. It also looks like you've done at least some of the piping underneath the deck, like the diesel exhausts. May I ask what plans you used for that? Its a really neat addition.

Not meant as a criticism of your superb work, just a question, but didn't Barb have the full length wooden deck?

Dockyard still working at.

I've found time for cut and make some hatch on the gato's deck... i've made a big mistake on the two big boat compartment... unfortunately it was late and
i've made them shorter than real...(hahah i'll never post a pic about it ghgh)
the really nice ting is the lateral navigation lights... seems quite real

i'm quite sure to be near the end... finally hope this week then i've to wait and wait till new pe build...

I'm still looking at the manholes above (they're ballast tank access). I don't know what Mike has n plans, or if I have anything. With Gatos, it's a 50/50% chance that they are the same...or not!

Nice to get rid of that prop guard. I'm hoping to build one of those angle-iron temporary ones held on with cable and turnbuckles...but towards the end of the project. Some good shots in warships 28. Can't find any decent pix of those manhole covers, so can't answer if different to EB and Portsmouth. Still looking. Mike K might have some plans.

I've been unable to find any, readable, drawings showing the tank access covers, or which tanks had them.
Logically, only hard tanks, that extended above the waterline, would have them, Never ballast (soft) tanks. That would include After Trim Tank, Auxiliary Tanks, 1 & 2, Safety Tank, Collecting and Expansion Tanks. Probably Normal Fuel and Fuel-Ballast tanks.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help, good luck

Mike

That prop guard looks good. And, for what it's worth, a WWII buddy remembers his boat using them. He says there were 16 bolts, used in pairs, to attach it. But he can't seem to remember, exactly, where the attachment points were.
That's the problem with getting old, you remember just enough to add to the confusion.

That's exactly what I was talking about! Nicely done!

I'm fairly certain from the pix that there's just steel cable run under the boat and attached with turnbuckles.

USS BARB Yard news:

after one year waiting for a restock of the 20mm orelikon single Mount finally i'm back with some new pics.
Well what i have to say is that  i have a huge work to do to transform them is something closer to real one,  at the end i've used the resin part and few parts from the pe modifing them a lot...lot .... looooot.
i have to do one more single and then i'll have to work on the 2x20m  for the rear sail.
Here there are also some pics of the rear rorpedo work i've started long time ago... probably someone will recognize them :)
have fun and good night.

Looking good! I love the interiors detail. Are you going to separate those flooding holes which can be seen from the hatch from the main passageway or not? Was it like that in reality?
Standing by for further progress, Great work so far!
