Title: Rivets on Type IIA
Post by: GlennCauley on 31 Jul , 2009, 16:47
I just noticed that there are no rivets on the hull of the SN Type IIA kit...  ???

Does anyone have any info or pics of the rivet patterns on this boat?

Hi Glenn,

An Archer set for Type II rivets would be well received. Researching the rivet patterns for IIAs would be difficult. However, the Vesikko MAY have similar patterns to the Type IIA. There are thankfully plenty of good photos of the Vesikko on the net.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi guys,

Note that there is much more rivets in Vesikko than IIA!

Then Vesikko (CV707) was build in Turku (south-west Finland) 1931-33 welding was a new technique in submarines.
So the Finnish shipyard Crichton-Vulcan preferred to use rivets. Welding was tested and used with care.
Deutsche Werke AG in Kiel used basically only welding.

So be careful with the rivets... If you take them seriously you have to dig up the facts with your magnifying glass.  ;D

Speaking about Vesikko...   I just visited local model store and the owner Martti Kuivalainen told me that Special Navy might not
release the CV707 kit this year. Too bad because i

Hi Urpok,

Thanks for letting us know about the MPM Vesikko kit. The more U-boat kits we have the better! Do you know if they will modify the area above the saddle tanks for the new Vesikko kit?

In the images above, you can see the main drainage slot on the IIAs was like the VIIs - it does not extend the full length of the saddle tanks. This is the style on the Special Navy model.

On the Vesikko, there was a smooth transition the full length of the saddle tanks.

Looking forward to the book.

Cheers,

Dougie

Sorry Dougie, I don't know. I bet not.
It seems to me that they have made a hybrid hull. It's economic way.
They know that we modellers love to fill and sand.  ::)

Actually the aft step of main drainage slot in the kit is not correct for Vesikko or any Type II. But it's easy to fix.
