Type VIIC attack periscope inside conning tower
« on: 02 Dec , 2018, 23:58 »
Hi everyone,
as many will know, I'm building the 1/48 Trumpeter's U-552 kit; now I'm working at the inside ofo conning tower, trying to superdetail all the visible surfaces....
Actually my attention is focused on the attack periscope fairing inside the conning tower; the Trumpeter's it seems that the periscope cylinder has only one diameter.
Looking at the photos I have, it seems instead the the diameters are two different ( see the red circled posted photos ), offset.
I post all the photos of the periscope fairing I have: is there anyone who has some other photos ?
Any help will be welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Filippo

Bianco that's all the photos I have too as you have mine that were taken for me by
Paul-Patrick Schroder. One of U995 curators and very helpful.

I concur that if all the Attack periscopes were similar that there seems to be an extra diameter.

Also Snowman are you getting access to the Conning Tower as it is usually off limits?

I'll PM you his details. He may let you in?

As far as i know the Air target periscope on U995 have beeing changed after the war to a Typ XXI persicope, so maybe the attac periscope have beeing changed after the war too to any more advanced persicope so maybe this are the reason why it looks different on the fotos from war time to today picture .
But thats only a opinion on this

I knew it was not easy, but I was hoping someone would have more photos....
I wrote to Laboe's foundation, asking some photos of attack periscope fairing inside conning tower: finger crossed...

Yes the search periscope has been changed post WWII,  I believe Maciek 'SnakeDoc' said it was from a Type XXIII.
