Title: U-boat photos link
Post by: dougie47 on 10 Dec , 2008, 14:02
Hi guys,

I've stumbled across a link with a number of U-boat photos -

http://www.german-uboats.com/Uboat%20Photos/

You need to be very careful as some of them mis-identify the boat in the photo.

Wink, you'll never guess what. Check out the U 557 photo -

http://www.german-uboats.com/Uboat%20Photos/U557.jpg

Is this really U 557? There are enough mis-identifications in the other photos to make us suspicious over whether this really is 557 or not. But the aft light and L-shaped antenna conduits do look right for U 55X series...so we might have a photo of your boat at last!

Cheers,

Dougie

....Hi dougie...I came across the same set of photos myself a few weeks ago. It does look like a wealth of information, but I agree some inaccuracies. Couldn't help but notice U-557, but if you recall our e-mail exchange about planked and slotted decks, you had pointed out that planked decks were installed after the autumn of '42. U-577 was launched in dec. of '40.
The deck in this photo looks to be the planked type.

I just discovered the recently released pictures from german federal archive. Lot of superb pictures of various U-Boats.
Even never seen picture of U-552. I know Dougie and Wink will be very interested in this.

Hi Bill,

Welcome to the AMP forum, nice to have you aboard.

I see exactly why this deck may be thought of as the later planked style. But the deck of the VIIC in the U 557 photo is definitely the early slotted deck. The deck pattern is typical of the pattern evidenced on the classic VIIC early slotted decks. Also, although it doesn't look like it, the spacers between the planks are actually at the same height level as the planks in this photo, thus making it the early slotted style.

Which boat are you building, by the way?

You'd be most welcome to post progress pics of your model.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi Siara,

Wow, they are superb! I'm particularly interested in the early VIIBs so the U 45 photos are just brilliant. That shot of Topp is also brilliant.

Have you any idea how to search for Bundesarchiv U-boat photos on Wiki?

If you have others please post the links. :)

Cheers,

Dougie

...Hello again, Dougie....I do see what you mean about the spacers..they're much more evident on the s'brd. side of the deck..
Right now I'm attempting to do an early U-201- U210 series ( net cutter/breakwater)
but i have to check more on available ulad decals, they seem to be as scarce as hens teeth.in fact I may have to do my shopping out of the states (U.S.A.)
Thanks for the heads up on the decking, though...I guess I just prefer planks. i did some trail and error on a nautilus deck and it's really not that hard to re-work to give an impressive plank effect....I'll have to save that for my VIIC/41, thanks again...

Hi Bill,

You should be able to get them from Mickster -

http://www.modelsbymickster.com/cgi-bin/hobbyshop/hobbyshop.pl?inv=Uboote

He is a really good source for U-boat model parts.

U 201 has a great camo pattern. It is debatable whether the camo pattern was there when the netcutter was on...quite possibly. U 204 had a nice diamond shaped camo patter so that is another favourite.

Cheers,

Dougie

Great stuff!

U 557 - wow, that would be cool, pretty hard to say! (but nothing in the shot says it's NOT!)
