Title: Sub Reports, Good References
Post by: chipper on 28 Jul , 2010, 14:08
I just came across this little gem.  By reviewing the microfilmed Patrol Reports at the Historic Naval Ships site (below) you can learn a lot about what modifications, camouflage or armament was added to your boat and WHEN!  A little hint.  You'll notice that right at the beginning of each patrol's report the skipper will review the repair work, bridge cutdowns, painting, Radar antennas and armament changes that just took place between patrols.  http://www.hnsa.org/doc/subreports.htm

HNSA is generally awesome  - the patrol reports as microfilm, wow, didn't know about those, thanks! It's a cool viewer, but saving doesn't work well (thumbnails only). A LOT of hrs to look over some really col stuff - thanks again!

HNSA also doesn't have all of the reports (not intended as a put down, just an observation). www.footnote.com does, however. They're a pay site, but they have free trial periods from time to time. They also have some maintenance and errata reports if they were attached to the patrol reports as addendums. They essentially scanned the records as held by the National Archives.
