Another Type IIb from ICM (1/144)
« on: 24 Jan , 2011, 15:30 »
With my U-2360 finished and U-Hai diorama 99% done I have started a new project: ICM's Type IIB U-boat. This is not going to be a WIP build log, the kit is fairly simple, I'm just trying to super-detail it.
The kit is superior to ICM's Type XXIII and quite fun to build. The only major issue (so far) was fitting the deck to the hull.
Here are some pics of the progress so far (the CT is not glued on yet just dry-fitted)

On the workbench:
Trumpeter 1/144 Type XXIII U-boat
ICM 1/144 Type IIb U-boat
ICM 1/144 Type XXIII U-boat
Revell 1/144 Type VIID U-boat
Minicraft 1/700 USS Ticonderoga CG-47
Collecting materials:
(scratchbuild) 1/144 Type XVII-B Walther U-bo

Thank you, guys.
to answer your questions:
-the red "stuff" is 3M Bondo Professional Glazing & Spot Putty:
http://www.shop3m.com/70008003579.html
I have ran out of Squadron green putty and read somewhere on the forums about this one and gave it a try. It is IMO much better than green putty and much cheaper

-to my knowledge there is no PE for ICM's Type IIb (yet), the PE I used are leftovers from Eduard's Type VIID

Also the base is just my "working" base for the process of building models :D :D
On the workbench:

I was just joking about the base! I have many similar, smeared with 80 million colours as I mix, etc.

The "bondo" car putty is AWESOME stuff by all reports, tho I have never used. Good to hear a first hand report. MY mate just used it to patch a drywall/gyprock wall before painting, filled a huge gap and dried solid within minutes. Thanks

Thanks conus :)

Is that BONDO (sounds like a known U2 singer  ;D) not "melting" the PS ?

Following with interest your build log...

cheers,

Pepper

The bondo is not melting the styrene at all! More I use it the more I like it over the green putty. It spreads better than green putty and it sands to absolutely smooth finish. With the green putty the surface sometimes seemed little "porese". This thing will sand so good that (even without using primer over it) after it is painted the surface looks like the original styrene. It's pretty amazing, I'm very impressed.

Quick update:
Almost done with the CT. As you can see I chose U-9 for this build.
The sail still needs more wash and some rust weathering but it is about 90% done...

I'm trying to find out where my super-detailing limits are in 1/144 scale...  ;D
So just for size reference I included US quarter in this one.
It's a little misleading but if you put the quarter side-by-side it is just a little higher then the sail (without the scope).
For all of you non-US guys the US quarter is 24mm in diameter.

Thank you.
Just a quick update: painting and weathering. CT still not glued on, still have to paint the deck and add some washes and rust.
After that rescue buoy, 2cm flak, railings an rigging.
I'm getting there. :D
Also, I have removed the kit's periscope because I found one extra Schatton's one.
