Another 20mm Flak 38
« on: 27 Feb , 2011, 08:51 »
Hi guys,
Figure I would throw up some pics of a side project I have been working on for a week or so.  Small little kit I picked up a while back after seeing Pepper's post.  Figured it would be something "quick and dirty".

Here she is, my 20mm Flakvierling 38:

The Griffon add on stuff is great!  One problem, not actually for this kit. :?   I figured I would proceed right along...

Modifying the base...

Small kit...lots of modifications!

Making things fit where they shouldn't...

Dry fitting...

Making new magazine holders.  Not perfect, but certainly detter than the kit supplied...

more to come....

Very nice TRM... Were the 20mm barrels available here in the states?

Hey Bill, Thank you.  Not too sure.  I made a quick search after I read you reply and didn't find much.  I got them from Hobbyeasy in Honk Kong.  Just under $20, four barrels and magazines.  Except for the legnthy shipping time (a month) The price was not bad.  JBModel has them too, probably around the same price with conversion and slightly more in shipping.  Jerzy over at JB is great to work with and shipping is a couple of weeks.

Got everything assembled pretty much and I was able to slap some paint on and undercoating for some rusting effects...

Dry fitting to the base I made.....

I was able to get some more painting done tonight.  Later, I will work on some chipping and such, try to get some pics up tomorrow.

Thanks!  ;)

NICE rust, and great base, grass is very cool and multi soil - bits of rust in the soil or just two types?

Thnaks Wink!  No just a couple-a-three different ground covers.  A sandy craft paste that dries in about 45 min, gravel and two types of buff.  Nice idea though, collected paint and rust chips right around underneath the moving parts! ::)

A completion...

I chose not to use the ammo boxes on this one...maybe on the next one :P

Cheers!

TRM...Nicely done, and impressive. My only question is: What did you use for
the base. It works very well. Did it come with a cover/dome?
                                                              Cheers/Regards

Thanks again Bill.  The base....I stole the cover to one of my wife's candles in the living room....still smells of "clean cotton" when you pick it up....duel purpose, conversation piece and air freshener, all in one. ;D

TRM... Well thought out. It's also noteworthy that the base also reflects
the undercarriage of the model itself. Bravo!!

really effective chipping and paint bubbling..all around a beaut! Do you think it would be a big seller to the general public, as an air freshener? ;D

Thanks guys! The kind words are most appreciated!

Wink,  I suppose so.  After what my case smells like right now....I would definitely say, yes! ::)  I am liking these small cheap kits.  Nice hit and run jobs while I figure out my next steps on the U-69.  Plus some good practice leading up to the weathering of her.  Karel has created an awesome look and feel to his.  I was planning much less wear-n-tear...chipping, some rusting and white washing.  Dougie led me down the road early on about her coming back from the 3rd patrol.  The pic clearly shows wear, but but more weathered damage than lack of maintenance.

Thanks again!

Cheers!
