Title: Airfix S-10 Schnellboot
Post by: Pat on 11 Sep , 2010, 17:33
I was in the hobby store the other day buying some more T-beams to make the frame for my U-boot deck, and saw they had the Airfix 1:72 S-boot model in stock (early version).

Has anybody here built this one?  It might be a nice counterpoint to the U-711 since it's the same scale.

Its an old model- from the seventies. Now you have choice of Italeri aswell, which is a nice model- much better than the Airfix one.

yeah, I'd go the italeri - I'm half thinking about the 1:35 (32?), but I wouldn't be able to touch it for 2yrs.

Thanks for the heads up on the Airfix vs Italieri kits.  Maybe I'll wait until I can find the latter then.

Interesting comparison, a friend of mine is building a Flower Class Corvette, also 1:72 scale like the U-boat.  The two models, same scale, are just about equal in length to each other.  But the difference in hull size is considerable.  The corvette is so much beamier than the sub that you could almost put 4 U-boats inside the corvette, stacked like 4 torpedo tubes.

Seeing the two together is what got me thinking about a Schnellboot companion to the U-boat.

It would be a great companion, all one navy er scale.

I'd probably have the same problem with the flag that I do with the U-boat, although perhaps not being from Germany, there isn't the same restriction.

I did build a model of Seeadler (a WWI German Q-ship) years and years ago.  The naval ensign at that time was a good one, and obviously where the WWII ensign was derived from.

The Revell S-100 and the Revell S-100 with quad gun are much better kits than the Airfix kit in 1:72.  That kit is highly inaccurate and the bilge should be widened to make it accurate.

Widen the bilge?  ???  How exactly will that make the Airfix kit accurate?   Doesn't make any sense.   Sounds like you confused bilge with knuckle, but fixing that omission still wouldn't make an accurate hull.

Happy to say that I have both of these models and that they are on the old bucket list. Someday.

The bucket list or the boat Flag??

Way to many things to build on that bucket list. God give me the time. Please.
