What are these pipes?
« on: 01 Mar , 2017, 10:16 »
Does anyone have information about what these 2 pipes are at the back of the IXC/40 tower?
Or have better pictures?

Are they spare barrel containers?

Hi Glenn,

I think you may be right. You can see the big tube on the port side which I believe is the spare container for a 37mm barrel.

The two vertical tubes you circled could be containers for spare 20mm barrels.

Cheers,

Dougie

Great, thanks Dougie!   :)
I'll treat them as such.

I find myself frustrated by a lot of the period pictures, trying to get details about tower configurations, etc.
In some sites, they label a pic as being U-889, and on another site the same pic is labelled as being U-190.     Aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhhhh

But my U-190 build is going along very well... the tower has been fun to build.

Hi Guys,

I concur, I have assumed that they are 2cm barrel stowage tubes as they are the right dimensions, it could be a photo of the U 190 as she did have these tubes fitted, where as after the schnorkel was fitted to the U 889 she did not have them, see attached photos. Of course the problem is amplified by the fact that after every patrol the boats had a refit which could include weapons and fittings changes, so not only do you need to know if you are looking at the right boat but at the right time.

Jon
