That would go well on the back of a SdKfz.
Other than the wheeled trailer, how much difference is there between this FlaKvierling and the version they put on some U-boats?

Interesting question, Pat! I know the 88mm deck gun was radically different to the land version (which seems crazy in one sense, but then, you have roll and pitch problems so makes sense in another).

Your work is great! I have always been intrigued by attempts to concentrate firepower. The FlaKvierling looks very dangerous for any aircraft trying to penetrate its defensive shield!

Bill, it sure does.
I have a computer strategy game called "Steel Panthers". It's WWII land forces with quite realistic capabilities for all the different types of units (there seems to be several hundred of them. the Germans in particular liked all sorts of variations)
Anyway, a single 20mm seems to have a chance of shooting down an aircraft, perhaps one out of every 10 flying over might get hit and 1 out 20 of those might be shot down. But the 4 barrels of the FlaKvierling together and the odds go up considerably.

I have always wondered if I was a captain of the U-boat would I go for a quadruple 2cm 38/43 U or a 3.7cm gun. Initial I thought, go for the quadruple 2cm, that a lot of lead in the air. But now reading a few U-Boat books, I would go for the bigger slower gun. It turns out that once the aircrews workout the U-boats were carrying the quadruple 2cm they would fly just out of range of the guns, and call for backup. Once there were 3 planes they would work as a term and almost very time got the U-boat. The U-boats did not have enough time to drive before the planes started there bombing run. They found with the bigger gun the planes had to increase there range on the boats, so by just giving the U-boats time to drive.

We must remember the Final Outcome of the deck gun question for ALL navies...submarines are meant to be stealthy! Guns might be cool, but it's best to DIVE!
The Germans went CRAZY with deck guns (ship and flak), and even the Yanks increased from 3" to 5", and tho most US boats had an aft gun for fighting while running, some added a SECOND Forward gun!
BUT..in the 50s, the Yanks went to NO guns, and even in the end of WWII the Germans dropped guns.

Yes, on a submarine it is best to be not seen, and not heard. A fast surface boat can mean the death of a sub. Stay silent, hit hard, and go deep...the ony way to survive.

But lots of surface guns are still cool!

Rokket, I think you are right! The Type VII's without a deck gun just does not look cool ;D That the only thing I don't like about the Type VIIC/41 :(

Have you ever seen the power of such a vierling ? WOW !!! All these guns had mass destruc. power !. As a bomber or fast boat pilot i would be scared by any kind of deck gun... :)
