James May (Top Gear) had school kids build a 1:1 scale Spitfire, complete with giant sprue.

How very interesting. Great job teaching the kids some skills and history at the same time. The "kit" looks great!

Yes it has many levels. Wonderful to see some of the kids go "woe, this is hard, and takes patience" and "this is fun"! I LOVE hi-tech, but I find it sad that simpe stuff (well, not "simple" but perhaps more basic) model making is not being embraced by youth.

You're right on the skills learning Ernest.
And so are you rokket, that the kids nowadays don't seem to have the patience and skill to embrace building models models like this.
Do you think it's the electronic games and tech, or kids are more mobil than years ago and so don't spend as much time at home, or what? I don't know the ages of everybody on this forum but I'd bet there are few of us under 25, and most a lot older than that.
BTW, I think the "Spit" was one of the most beautiful aircraft ever designed, by any nation. It always reminds me of a bird with the shape of its wings.
Perhaps I gained that appreciation from my father, who was always relieved to see them coming up to meet him as the sun rose over the Channel on his way headed west back to base in the morning?

Could be Pat, both ont he ages/times and the returning Spits. Funny you say that about the wings, I agree completely! When you see one wingover or bank, that distinctive shape just screams "bird!" strange and well put.

I think when I was a kid, Dad bought me about 5 different Spitfire models to build for him to go alongside the Lanc, Hali and Wimpy (Lancaster, Halifax and Wellington) aircraft that he was operational in.
The last aircraft model I built was a diorama of a FW-190 undergoing field repairs that's now in a museum. I think I was in univ. when I built it.
The models available today are so much more detailed. I've seen them with the interiors of Wellingtons and Spitfires so detailed you could pass of a photo as if it were a real one.
Alas, even the U-boat is stretching my budget these days. Good thing that over the years of building wooden models that I developed a lot of scratch-building skills.

Actually, almost all the models I've built have either been sold, donated or broken up for scrap over the years.
At the present time, I have no completed models in the house.
Chesapeake Bay skipjack - wooden - almost completed - mostly scratch built
USS Constitution - (the large Revell kit) - almost completed with all interior detail scratch including furniture in day cabin, scuttlebutts, and about 125 crew.
