U-Boot im Focus #15 - out now
« on: 12 Sep , 2017, 13:19 »
Hello folks,

I received the new edition (UiF#15) of U-Boot im Focus and thought I'd share my thoughts. UiF is a bit like when your favourite band releases a new album - you know that it will be of high quality. As usual it is full of quality photos that have not been seen before and this allows us to learn more and more. No matter how much we know there are always more detail to learn via these magazines.

One particular highlight for modellers is a photo from above of a VIIC tower. This allows the reader to see details which are usually obscured in other photos. It shows the size and position of the various steps, the lack of square holes to the left of the UZO and the UZO undeniably in the central position. Some may recall the dbate back in 2003 when we found the UZO offset on the Revell kit. Although U 756 did have an offset UZO the majority of all others had it in a centrla positions (as per the UiF photo).

Another good photo is U 552 with a tarpaulin covering the red devil.

There are some really good shots of U 84 showing parts of the L-shaped trunks from an unusual angle. Also one with the AA platform on the aft deck.

Although not of U-boats there are some good behind the scenes shots of Schepke, including a stunning one of him in colour.

For modellers there are a few shots of U 431 with an unusual mottled camo pattern at the front of the tower. This was before the boat had the Mittelmeerturm so it means modellers can depict U 431 with this camo pattern. Hopefully someone will make this one day.

The following details are on their website -

•  58 pages with 63 photos - thereof 13 in colour, 1 coloured document, 1 coloured conning tower sideview, 2 coloured boat-reviews, 3 maps, Readers Forum
 •  Unusual: The Commander Lends a Hand
 •  Boat in Focus: U-84 – The Story of a Boat Patrols off Newfoundland, America and in the Caribbean
 •  Documents: The Krupp Germaniawerft AG’s Knight’s Cross Certificate
 •  Conning Towers: U-431 – One-Off Camouflage Scheme in the Mediterranean
 •  Fates: The Last Photos and the Last Voyage of Kptlt. Schepke (U-100)
 •  Photos with a Story: U-Boat Code Names in the Bases at St. Nazaire and La Pallice
 •  Scenery: A Look into the Conning Tower
 •  Cap Badges: U-50’s Big “Whale” Cap Badge
 •  Interior Shots: U-109

 •  as well as photos of U-437, U-561, U-65, U-237 and further informations

Lastly, there will be a book on U 552 out at the end of 2017 -

The 190 photos are what we modellers want as U 552 is one of the two most popular model choices. No prizes for guessing what I'll be getting towards the end of the year.

Cheers,

Dougie
