Liferaft colour
« on: 13 Oct , 2017, 09:44 »
Yes, maybe a silly question... but I am asking for a friend.

The liferafts (big & small) used on Type VIIC boats... were they black or another colour?

See the attached pic of sinking of U-625.  You can see the difference in colour between the crew uniforms and the liferaft colour.   That may be due to wetness/dryness, exposure, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Glenn,

There may be exceptions but the liferaft containers would normally be painted black like the other deck details.

Sometime the metal hatches on the deck (and other metal details) shined brightly in a way that the wooden deck did not. There are even black metal hatches which look white under strong sunshine in the black and white photos.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hi Dougie,

We were wondering about the colour of the actual liferaft itself, not the container/hatch.  :)

Hi Glenn,

Oops! I should have read more carefully. Sorry but I don't know the colour of the liferafts.

Cheers,

Dougie

A while back now, I did some research on the 5 man liferafts of the Type VIIC/41 and I also came up with yellow being the colour.

As I'm going to be using a liferaft or two in my diorama I'm interested if yellow seems to be the correct color or not.

Yellow??
