Building my typ-XXIII / trumpeter-1/144
« on: 07 Jun , 2010, 10:57 »
Hi,

This model will my second step in the submarine's world...
I'm unpatient to begin this sub, it might be home soon... I found some historical pictures, but i have to say that my sources are poor.

I took the TRUMPETER model instead of the ICM : http://www.hyperscale.com/2009/reviews/maritime/trumpeter05907reviewbg_1.htm

In advance thank you... ;)

Cheers,
Laurent.

Hi gents,

I found some material on websites, subsim.com for great 3D drawings, and some other low-res pics from internet. History and list of coded boats too.
But nothing's mention the "name" of this damn beauty  ???. If somebody knows the code of the sub -pic 1st post-, it would be great ; not essential but this future birth (modell-build) needs a name...

So i have 2 questions for you  ;D :

-What is the code of this type XXIII ? Or what do this geometrical strip composition mean ?

-I'm looking for plans/detail pics concerning the hull wooden-deck ; on the model it's molded into one piece on the hull. I'd like to make it with real wood. (The pics are from SUBSIM / Tomi_099 "the old man", real nice 3D !!! BTW : http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=116988&page=15)

Many thanks to you, if -with a bit of luck- you read this post.

Cheers,
Laurent.

I think it's going to be tricky. A bigger scale you could lay your own planks, but grain will be a problem anyway. Hopefully Pat will see this, I think he's the deck man

I'm working on that "problem" : I'm smockin' big cigars and they're always wrapped in a wooden sheet ; it's generaly made of high quality exotic wood.
My idea is to glue this sheet on a styren sheet...

Yeah, I save that thin veneer from cigars too but it's more useful for making square or wide areas of wood than it is for planking because it's useually too thin for planks by itself unless you stick to something (like the plastic you suggest) and then it's extremely difficult to cut it in a straight line for planks.

However, if you do decide to use it for planks, cut the plastic sheet into strips first because it's easier to get straight lines, and if something does go wrong (the plastic cracks or the cut goes off straight) then you haven't lost a piece of veneer.  Then glue the cigar veneer to the plastic "planks", making sure it's oversize, and trim the edges with an X-acto knife or scapel.

I use precut cherry wood planks that I get from a company called Lee Valley in Canada.  They're very striaght, very thin, they take stain and paint well and they have almost no grain so they look great for wood decks.  You can order it online at

http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=40840&cat=1,250,43217

Unfortunately, the cost of $23.50 CDN might be too much for the small amount you'd be using on your boat.  Each strip is about 24" (61 cm) long so you'd only need about 2 strips.  Maybe there's some way we can work out how to send them to you?

On the type XXIII itself, the deck is really just a few planks bolted onto frames straddling the PH.  Keep in mind that in real life, the planks were spaced a few cm apart to let water through.  They were raised above the PH slightly also, so water flowed undeath them between the deck and the PH.

You're lucky, the type XXIII is the easiest one of all the U-boats to make a wood deck for and you're also correct that making the deck out of real wood looks great and adds a lot of authenticity to your build.

Thank you Pat for all your attention.

In fact it's quiet difficult to cut the veneer if you don't glue them on a styren sheet (evergreen); the needed planks are approx. 1,0 mm wide -for the "special navy" 1/72- and 0,5 mm for the 1/144 but it works.
I never had the "lucidity" to search on internet for precut wood planks. Thanks for the link, very usefull.

Very kind from you ! I'll contact you via PM if necessary  :)

You're right, that's what i noticed on all the pics i have, but the frame is invisible and well this is what i'm looking for : a plan or a pic from the frame...
It seems that the deck is made of 4/5 parts. How does the deck frames fits (it's the case) around the 2 bollards, etc... ?

nice work on the grab-handles and hatch work! Those details are worth the effort!
